Annie was born in Melbourne and showed a strong interest and talent in art since she was very young. After completing her bachelor of fine art majoring in sculpture at Monash university in 1998 Annie worked in bronze before moving to wire. The movement and immediacy of the material appealed to her. Annie has been working in wire for almost 15 years. She recently moved to Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula with her husband and 3 children. Her work is best described as whimsical often humorous snapshots of life. Dogs and the human form feature in her work along with movement. She has been involved in many group and solo shows as well as having her own stand in the Emerging artist section of Art Melbourne and Sydney. She has won awards and has work in many private collections in Australia, New York and London. Bio statement: “I like to have humour in my work as I find that people can identify with a humorous piece. I like to give the works and Australian flavour and I find the beach, dogs and the Hills hoist work towards that. I want to remind people of their childhoods and just generally use human themes so people can identify with the work. It is figurative because I want it to be accessible to the average person and to tell a story about life. Sculpture is my passion and I am so lucky to be doing something that I love and it makes other people happy to.”

The Bride Stripped Bare, 2015–25

“The Bride Stripped Bare” (2015–25), David’s most ambitious piece incorporating cracked glass, is a direct reference to Marcel Duchamp’s famous “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)” (1915–23). The work is made of sections of glass, each shattered in a different way, with the title painted on a rough piece of found wood attached to the left side. The fissures can be seen as lines in a drawing. David’s use of distressed and forlorn materials evokes Robert Rauschenberg’s early Combines, while his integration of painted wood recalls the creations of Dial and Holley. As I looked around his studio, the allusions and connections came to mind but, more importantly, quickly left. In an age in which originality seems to be an obsolete goal, David has done something unexpected and necessary — he has referred to masterworks without resorting to the familiar tropes of parody or imitation, and without losing his individuality. Is “The Bride Stripped Bare” an attempt to destroy Duchamp’s legacy, honor him, or both? Does art have to be either/or, or can it both/and? David’s ability to hold contradictory viewpoints simultaneously while adding something personal infuses his art with pain, anger, and love for the work of others. Joan Miró Le Somnambule, (The Sleepwalker), 1974 is a playful artwork that includes symbols and motifs typical of the artist. Visual elements float within the picture plane and create multilayered formations which combine subtle color accents with bold and vigorous brushstrokes to convey a whimsical and energetic attitude. Unexpected stars and spots in red, orange and blue surround the central abstracted composition, which suggests a startled mask of eyes. Lines protruding from the central subject matter give the suggestion of eyelashes. Outlines in pale blue, these teardrop shapes contain several concentric circles in black, white, red and yellow. In the lower right corner there is a red area aside a light blue area which is an extension of the lower teardrop shape. The piece is dominated by dark hues allowing for subtle areas of white to shine through the background. This etching and aquatint is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Maeght éditeur, Paris; printed by Morsang, Paris.

Spooky bird stories. Last year's Halloween comic.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, a screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".
