NEW from me:

Political hostility, high visa fees and (in the case of the UK) stagnant incomes are making the UK and US less attractive destinations for top international talent.

That steep decline in the appeal of moving to the US after 2016 is 👀

About four-in-ten immigrants (43%) say they worry a lot or some, up from 33% in March.

I think we all know what's gone wrong here - Labour haven't spent enough time loudly telling voters that immigrants are, in fact, bad, and its urgent they be protected from them. Once Labour really get on that people will see that Reform offer nothing and wise up I am sure.
❗ Reform GAIN from Labour

Last week's Thetford Castle (Breckland) council by-election result:

REF: 47.3% (+47.3)
LAB: 26.7% (-15.8)
CON: 15.1% (-13.9)
LDEM: 10.9% (+10.9)

No UKIP (-14.0) Ind (-14.5) as prev.

+/- 2023

Estimated turnout: ~24% (0)

New ICE data show that the court order banning profiling reduced ICE arrests in LA by 66%! In other words, ICE is effectively admitting that TWO THIRDS of LA arrests were unconstitutional profiling. Did they admit this to the court? NO! They lied to the courts...

🚨🚨🚨Blockbuster paper out today! Bear with me as I explain why this one is so important.

🤔 The *economic* anger about immigration is based on the false notion that immigrants take jobs or lower wages. A major misunderstanding behind this view is that immigrants only increase the supply of labor.

Female academics are much more affected by the birth of a child than are male academics.

Academic mothers are much more likely to...

◾temporarily leave the labor force

◾and, if they return, shift away from tenure-track positions.

A week ago there was an open letter signed by politics researchers urging Keir Starmer to abandon his proposed anti-immigrant policies. With the support of the organizers, I've created the same petition but open to all academics.

Cool. We’ve ripped up the social contract with young people, so they can’t afford to buy a home, or settle down and have children or ever retire. Let’s now force half of them to be trained only to do jobs they will hate in order to stop people from other countries moving here for a better life.
Turning half of unis into voc colleges could cut student immig a lot

"To underwrite the industrial strategy half the universities should be turned into vocational colleges linked to the needs of the armed forces+industry

We desperately need a skilled workforce that does not rely on immigration"

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

I’ll keep pushing this line of analysis because I’m increasingly convinced the clearest path out of this mess is for Dems to adopt a relentless anti-corruption, anti-inequality, anti-oligarchy, pro-democracy platform. The Dem leadership hasn’t realized it yet, but they’re now a reform party.
How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes?

Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce.

Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

The media need to be careful not to further the narrative that Trump is extracting concessions from trade partners by bullying them into submission. Many so-called concessions were already in place as a result of more cooperative diplomatic approaches.

Analysis | Did Trump cave on his Canada and Mexico tariffs?
Some of the purported concessions that led to a 30-day pause on the tariffs were things Canada and Mexico had already done before Trump’s threat, but it’s complicated.
