An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

i guess one thing we can all be thankful for this year is not having "i know if this man is confirmed by the senate it will have explosive global health ramifications and kill unthinkable numbers of people, including children. but more importantly, my ex-girlfriend wounded my ego" on our conscience

All my relationships improved when I stopped using search engines and went back to asking people questions about things. Including the "stupid" qs. There are no stupid questions, just people who are jerks when you ask them things. Find people who are not jerks, or tell the jerks to stop doing that.
This is so soulless, I can't stand it. We have BRAINS. We can USE THEM.

Isn't it so weird to deeply know in your bones something obvious with no equivocation, for years and years, and then to one day see articles about people wondering if maybe the incredibly obvious thing you've known this whole time might be happening, as if the media is discovering it now??

Amazing. THE SPARE is on that piracy site from that last repost. I pretty much never talk about this stuff anymore, because it's been a long time, but I dropped the US price to $2.99 in *checks notes* 2021 and just forgot to ever raise it again. It costs less than most things.

I'd never heard of this site until tonight. Both my books are on there. Did you know my publisher offers one of three lowest royalty rates in the entire industry? And that I didn't get an advance? Literally all I make is from royalties. Royalties I don't earn when you pirate my book.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

Lumping them together as “AI” gives readers the impression that a single class of tool is discerning novel protein structures, teasing subtle patterns out of mountains of LHC data, writing a student’s History 101 paper, and arguing a ketamine-addled billionaire could post up Shaq in his prime. No.

Machine learning (umbrella term, I know) is a useful, sometimes transformative tool in the hands of trained researchers who understand how to deploy it and critically assess the results.

A chatbot is not useful in the same ways (though underlying technologies may be, in other contexts).

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

All I can read in Brooks's manner of expressing himself is him cringing away from the idea that people he knows are *in* that class, and that he might be a key player in the protective shell that surrounds them.
Someday you, too, could have the moral fortitude to look upon a years-long rape circus organized by the nation's most powerful elites and declare, "The people upset about this are speaking about it the wrong way."
