Eleven paragraphs into the story, the Statesman grants that the $77k that Republicans are complaining city council spent on travel and food "pales in comparison" with the city's $6.3 billion budget and has no bearing IRL on the math of whether Austin needs a tax rate election. So disingenuous.
Austin wants taxpayers to tighten their belts. City Hall isn’t doing the same.
Austin City Council members gave themselves 55% more money for travel and 43% more for food in a budget that raises property taxes more than 20%. Voters will decide on the hike Nov. 4.
