a while back the wife and i did thanksgiving by ourselves for a few years and we substituted deep fried Cornish hens or buttermilk marinated roasted chicken. Absolutely delightful.
Turkey is a subpar bird, and every Thanksgiving, well-meaning people spend days and thousands of dollars trying to make their beloved feast centerpiece taste as good as mediocre chicken

without wading into the consumer preferences vs subsidies debate going on here, just speaking for myself, the cross-pressures between urban and suburban amenities are real even for people who prefer the former, especially with kids
I think the subsidies are bad – they externalize the very real costs of suburban living. They distort housing preferences. They reduce density, reduce climate resilience. There’s a lot more room for urbanism, mid-rise housing, walkability. But underneath all of that: most people do want a house.

my contribution from this discussion is that i listened to Wickham's The Inheritance of Rome on audio book last summer mostly on long bike rides and it's both a fantastic volume of history and a terrible audio book for long bike rides
This is........contentious. Like, yes, there is absolutely a lot of continuity between the Roman Empire and the "Barbarian" successor states but that period of fragmentation was explicitly due to the Roman state losing its monopoly on violence and acceding to Foederati demands under duress.
The Visigoths for instance did not really /conquer/ half of Gaul and Iberia, they were /given it/ in a grant, and over time casually increased their domains with the all but explicit permission of the emperors. Rome did not fall, it privatised itself.

I think reasonable people can disagree over whether the shorter-term harm of Rs killing the filibuster under Trump is worse than the long-term harm of nobody killing it, but the real problem is that I simply don't believe Ds will do it in ideal circumstances.
people are being very flip about the possible harms of getting rid of the filibuster *right now* in a way that imo undermines the core case that the Republic is in special peril. it's clearly all downside until 2027 even if you grant electoral backlash! Dems can't have a trifecta until 2029!
