Canadian theatres undergoing the Great Artistic Leadership Shakeup of 2025: some thoughts!

A few thoughts about the NYT critics shakeup: Theater is one of the hardest of all disciplines to cover as a critic (or reporter). You need to know its language and history. And there's a ton you can and should do to educate yourself. But you can never "catch up." You can't see what you didn't see.>

This company is workshopping new plays in front of a paying audience. The show that critic Joshua Chong attended surprised him in more ways than one.

Haven't posted in a while so I thought I'd share the news that the workshop production of my new play, A Little Closer, is almost entirely sold out!

This is the first experiment at The Vault Creation Lab. It's been a lovely, chill, dreamy process so far. Come see it!

Every time the CBC does something stupid, you'll hear even progressives calling for it to be defunded.

But as someone who grew up in rurally, I can tell you that venture-capitalist-owned media is not going to small towns. They don't see money? They don't see value.

The CBC is an essential service.
This is great. CBC is hiring local reporters for 23 communities across the country that are underserved for news.

And early voting stats are at 6+% vs 9 in the last election and we had the lowest turnout ever back then. This snap call with only 3 advance days instead of 10 really works in Doug’s favour. We have to step up and talk to people.

Saving the CBC isn't just about protecting your favourite program or personality. It's about preserving national unity -- and preventing Canada from being subject to a hostile foreign takeover. www.nationalobserver.com/2024/11/19/o...
Saving the CBC is really about saving Canada
Pierre Poilievre reportedly has plans to slash the CBC's budget. That would be a disaster for national unity.

Revisiting something I started writing in the 2010s where a character interns at an outlet like Vice or Gawker, I've had to basically rewrite her storyline to drag it into the present, obnoxiously musing, "What do young creatives want to do for work, now that the Internet is dead?" I feel old.

Thanks for the looooooove!
1. M.R.Albert's THE BIDDING WAR. Another locally crafted hit for Crow's Theatre, like FIFTEEN DOGS and THE MASTER PLAN. Albert's devious script attracted an all-star cast for this peak #Toronto tale exploring "good" ppl doing bad things to snag the city's "last affordable house."

I like it, too 🤩
Interested in this trailer from Crows. Timelines between when a show is ready to be shot, and when you could use a trailer have been a barrier to a show like this with a short run. Also, theatre made for an IRL audience often looks not great on video. But this works. vimeo.com/1034298636
