I figure if they told the public that they were stepping up radiation detection around the city (for whatever reason) - there could be a huge panic - at Christmas. So it’s better to play dumb.

I've seen the argument that if DOJ didn't charge file charges against Gaetz, the allegations against him must be weak, but this doesn't necessarily follow. DOJ's authority to prosecute sex crimes is limited. As general matter, statutory rape, etc. are not a federal offenses.
