I didn’t have to teach today, so I just went in to do some stuff in the lab. And I got to leave early and take a nap with my dog. I love these liminal days around the holidays

Hey folks, as news of Watson's demise spreads, please don't set aside his weighty legacy of misogyny and racism. He was truly among the worst of us. www.vox.com/2019/1/15/18...
DNA scientist James Watson has a remarkably long history of sexist, racist public comments
“People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty,” he said in 2003. “I think it would be great.”

I had a migraine start in the middle of teaching yesterday. It’s been years since I had one and it stopped me in my tracks. Timely, I guess, for #MigraineAwarenessWeek

Wow that’s some incredible news
"Jack is 30, a barrister's clerk, newly engaged to Chloe and has taken part in research at UCL to turn his diagnosis into a positive."
"But he'd always known he was destined to share his father's fate, until today."

Wow.

Another much larger dog went after mine at the dog run today. Pinned him a couple times up against the fence I couldn’t see what was happening/get to him. Then the other owner gave me attitude because “oh mine won’t bite”. How the fuck am I supposed to know that? I hate people sometimes 🤬

We have finally navigated the endless red tape and gotten the donation site to support the US FlyBase groups up and running.

FlyBase needs your help! We ask that European labs continue to contribute to Cambridge, UK FlyBase, whereas US and other non-European labs can contribute to US FlyBase. For more information and how to donate: wiki.flybase.org/wiki/FlyBase...

UK taxpayers who donate to @flybase.bsky.social privately can use Gift Aid if they donate through the University of Cambridge philanthropy site (link below). This increases the value of your donation at no cost to yourself.
A reminder you/your lab can support FlyBase at Cambridge through the following link. Every bit helps. Please share if you yourself can't donate.

I had to get a new phone and my god how I hate our interlocking system of two-factor authentication, account recovery and password reset. I have spent all day just trying to re-access stuff I use all the time

One of my colleagues and a union comrade was abducted at the Camarillo action yesterday.

We still don't know where he is, who is holding them, or any other information about his status.

If you're in the area, please reach out to the folks listed in the press release and donate to the bail fund.

The mural scene in Philly is excellent and would be even better with more building-sized science murals. If I had a wall like that, I would absolutely get at Sarah
Btw if you live in Philadelphia and own a building (like your house for example) with a big wall like this and want a science mural, get at me. Especially if your street has high foot traffic. Philadelphians feel free to repost this one.
Every time I walk by this wall I’m like my god this thing needs a mural.
