NBC story on NIH Institute Director vacancies...

www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

It is bad enough that national news networks (well, not CBS) are covering this story,,,
National Institutes of Health faces leadership vacuum as director positions sit open
More than half of the NIH's institutes and centers don’t have permanent directors, giving the Trump administration an unusual opportunity to reshape the agency. The latest departure came on Friday.

Just reread Old School by Tobias Wolff, once of my all time favorites.

Will the main character get to meet a famous author or will his ever more reckless behavior get him expelled from boarding school- and what will he learn about himself in the process

We are living in a world where we have safe and effective vaccines against some of the most detrimental diseases in history.

And yet people choose not to give them to their children and protect them and others.

Measles could have been eradicated by now.
A reminder that measles cannot be treated, it can only be prevented.

It is one of the most contagious diseases in the world and can cause blindness, deafness and life-threatening lung and brain infections.

Both chambers of Congress have now passed the FY26 minibus with NIH provisions. The President will sign.

(1) $48.7 billion for NIH
(2) Full IDC recovery
(3) No more multi-year funding
(4) No NIH reorganization, maintaining the current IC structure.

rereading "Taking a Long Look" by Vivian Gornick. I love her essays! Clear, opinionated, she read Moby Dick so I don't have to, what's not to like!

i've been watching the coyote on Alcatraz's progress with great interest. a week-ish ago, a coyote SWAM to Alcatraz for the first time and looked fuckin rough after the dangerous swim. but the coyote is doing fine now, gorging itself on unprepared birds & rats who are dealing with a sort of Godzilla

Can’t do good science in an unfree country. Defund ICE.
If you are a scientist funded by NIH and agree that if the HHS/NIH bill is held hostage by linkage for funding to DHS/ICE, we need to shutdown both and save lives, its time to speak up. Right now, with a few exceptions, the silence is deafening
As a someone with a 33 year NIH-funded lab whose grant is supposed to be reviewed this week, shut NIH down if that is what's needed to end ICE terrorism. Innocent lives are more important 🧪
