In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

When companies charge hidden fees at checkout, it can cost families thousands of dollars a year.

Starting tomorrow, those mysterious fees are banned in Minnesota.

How does he know Johnson didn’t cheat? This sounds more like an attaboy for not getting caught cheating. Only his wife can define what that means to her. Does being turned into a human glory hole count? Duggarvision? Swinging like the Falwells? Where does she draw the line or turn a blind eye?
Rep. Tim Burchett makes the NY Post for praising Speaker Johnson for not cheating on his wife, which is apparently an impressive feat in Trump’s GOP. (the Post speculates it was a shot at McCarthy)

The departments of treasury and state announced sanctions against Russia and Iran today for interfering in the 2024 election. There are already indictments. Will Trump reverse the sanctions and dismiss the indictments? I’m certain he will.

Once upon a time, I’d be laughing at this.
In his annual report, Chief Justice Roberts decries the politicization of the court by others. Yet, his sole admonition to the judiciary itself comes in the second to last paragraph.

I love Silver City. I wish I could go down there more often. Covid wiped out all the work/partnerships I had going down south, with many of my contacts shifting jobs. Makes it hard to cover the expenses associated with spending time in those areas.

Great piece.

Look for patterns & parallels that repeat.
There are so many fun ways to do it now!
Elon doesn’t think he needs to.
History is littered with the regrets of guys like him.
Elon Musk likes to say "“vox populi, vox dei" when he gets enough people on Twitter to yell for him. The phrase has a history that warns against the "tumult of the mob" and urges wise counsel and good stewardship. When people like Musk lead, destruction follows. /1

Elon Musk didn’t just misunderstand an iconic medieval quote. He’s missing a much bigger lesson from history
The voice of the people is important. But the iconic quote was part of a broader warning about the dangers of bad governance.

Correct.

Voter suppression became election denialism.

Election denialism turned into post-election litigation.

Failed post-election litigation led to fake electors.

Fake electors justified disregarding the results.

When all of that failed...we ended up with a violent insurrection on Jan 6.
You can’t reasonably separate what happened on Jan 6 2021 from the broader legal and political fuckery, it’s the same story
