Hey new folks! I'm a publisher / writer / designer who runs a publisher grounded in place and community (@hubcitypress.bsky.social) and advocates for small, local, diverse, and authentic in direct response to the consolidation and corporatization of nearly everything in the book industry.

It's hard to express what it meant to watch Maurice, Natalia, Celeste, and Rhea tell their stories—in their own voices—this morning.

The segment revealed a brutal reality: homelessness at this scale isn't about personal failure. It's the result of policy choices and systems built to exploit people.

Some news: tomorrow at 9am, Ted Koppel + CBS Sunday Morning will air a two-part story on the devastating surge of full-time workers being pushed into homelessness.

I'll be interviewed along with two families from There Is No Place for Us. It would mean a lot if you'd watch and help spread the word.

And the bookscan numbers I've seen for 831 are lower than hub city's sales. Does someone want to give us $4.05 mill in seed money?
I’ll say this much: This reads exactly like what it is: people who discovered romance five years ago and decided they had all kinds of amazing new ideas to “fix” it. Connections between books? That feel kind of cozy to the reader? How did no one ever think of that?? www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/b...

I've been calling romantasy and other booktok stuff "fast literature" for years so this makes total sense to me.

And one of my local religious charter schools started a measles outbreak (!) bc of their abysmal vaccination rate.
Getting annoyed listening to charter school activists lie again and again that charter schools are public schools.

They are not.

They are publicly funded private schools that siphon money away from public schools and produce no better results.

I think we're about to get an absolute glut of stuff like this

I'm in the weirdest position of defending something (publishing) that I'm often critical of. Over here, I'm a salty indie publishing booster yelling about corporate conglomeration. Over there I say things like, "actually every size publisher is made up of really smart good humans championing books!"
i'm arguing with the self-pub people on threads again.

The attorney general and the FBI director, a manosphere podcaster bro, pulled into the situation room a member of Congress best known for getting kicked out of a Beetlejuice musical for drunkenly giving her date a handy, in order to pressure her about the president's child sex trafficking scandal.

Like I dunno, maybe the reason it took a lady to break open the story of all the men protecting the dude trafficking underage girls is because the male journos were all emailing him making jokes about it?

pretty funny in retrospect that QAnon hinged on the idea that powerful elites at the highest levels of government were smart enough to talk in code when sending emails to each other about their despicable crimes

On this Epstein stuff, just a reminder that multiple contestants in the Miss Teen USA pageant - to repeat, TEENAGERS - said that when Trump owned it, he would walk into the dressing room so he could watch them changing clothes

re my post about a ndp-esque party! I think we've given this party plenty of chances and need new options. I get we're terrified of splitting the vote but also I dream of a country where the centrist dems have to court a lefty party to get things passed--instead of treating them like a nuisance.
“You can’t be mad at Democrats for not fighting because they’re the only thing we have to fight fascism” is an interesting political philosophy that I would like to unpack, not in the sense of giving it further examination, but in the sense of throwing it out the back window.

companies, demanding I text former employees to get two-factor codes from them in order for me to make changes on my account is insane and you need to cut it out.

so many people have sent me info about the literary arts fund opening up and it's honestly moved me so much to see how much people want us to get that level of support (and no worries, I am on it lol)

I find it darkly hilarious that I DID submit an NEA grant in the spring (pre cancelations, pre firings, etc) and I uh...can't find any record of it. I think it...just doesn't exist anymore?
