Facebook reminds me of the note I made 5 years ago for a girl in the jr high Making Comics class I was doing who was suddenly leaving the school. She was one of two stellar talents in class that year, and I hoped so much that she'd continue making comics.

The idea of "not talking politics" sounds lovely until you realize that your politics are "nobody should starve" and theirs are "have your family exterminated and you thrown in a concentration camp", but you're both agreeing joyfully that Mario Party really does suck.
I had a friend for three years I never talked politics with who turned out to secretly be a member of Identity Evropa and was connected to a series of racial terrorism incidents on his campus. He was arrested in Florida last month for trespassing and throwing his soiled underwear at a police officer

There's no anomaly here. People, globally, volunteer their time to powerful public goods the moment they're not actively terrified that they'll lose their home, their food, and their freedom. Which means that capitalism requires us all to live in fear, always - because it can't compete with free.
