2 thoughts re: this interview:

1) Anyone who has dealt with an addict (or been one) knows they lie, constantly, first to themselves (“I can quit any time, nobody knew I was drinking” etc) and then to everyone else.

2) Fame, or maybe “relevance,” is an addiction.

Ah yes, Main Street in 1956, when you could hang out with strangely dressed identical women in sunglasses, in front of the ATLEO, across the street from RELEA DLIKES.

Those were the greblmongs.
There is something deeply wrong with the CEO class.

@tomscocca.bsky.social in Defector: “One amazing fact about the 2024 presidential campaign was that not even once… did anyone ask Donald Trump what he would do if, as president in 2025, he were to learn about an outbreak of some new and deadly disease.”

wish more people would listen to will bc he seems to be the rare person who understands that this is not about policy…

we r in an informational landscape shift…policy barely matters
I feel like I’m crazy. Am I the only one who can see that THESE PEOPLE ARE DOING THE SAME THING and THEY’RE BOTH BEING STUPID?

“Oh if only Democrats had adopted MY precise rhetoric and agenda, none of this would have happened!”

No! It would have! And they mostly already do!

*the medium is the message*
Everyone is seeing this through their lens of course but, to me, this so obviously the result of social content platforms and their impact on our ability to create a shared reality.

I'm pretty disappointed with Timothy Snyder's rather trite new book about freedom from tyranny

But his previous work gave us a great formulation that's especially apt for Americans today, especially in the media and universities:

DO NOT OBEY IN ADVANCE.
