In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Programming note: No newsletter today. Gonna aim to have it out tomorrow (along with FIVE new post-mortems on MLSsoccer).

I am temporarily out of POWER and want to give Houston and Colorado their due rather than phoning it in.

Apologies.

lmao this fucking league
To put it another way: Minnesota scored more goals in this game after receiving a red card than they had scored in league play during their entire 10-year existence.

Round One drama: What we learned in Game 3 & what comes next for those who advanced, and those whose season came to an end.

Including Minnesota & Seattle playing an all-time great, "Only in MLS!!" decider.

San Diego, in their first year as a club, instilled a clear identity from top to bottom. The Timbers never found their own identity. Year 50 ends in the same way it began: a brutal beatdown at the hands of a far superior opponent. #RCTID

For the record, the four most fun teams in MLS history:

- 2001 Fusion
- 2019 LAFC
- 2023-24 Crew
- 2025 Caps

Next Tier:

- 1996-1998 D.C.
- 2000 Fire
- 2010 RSL
- 2012 Quakes (this is my lizard brain talking)
- 2014 Galaxy
- 2016-17 TFC
- 2018 ATL
- 2022 Union
- 2024-25 Sounders
This year's Sounders team was the most fun they've ever been & imo one of the ~10 most fun teams in MLS history.

I simply can not imagine not being entertained by the way they played (though I agree w/ you that they had a habit of taking the foot off the gas once they thought they had a game won).
I miss when the sounders were fun to watch. Not endless endline cut back ball.

smh look at this guy
If Doku had a consistent final product, he’d be absolutely terrifying.

The Premier League is now 5 seconds of open play then 30 seconds of prepping for a set piece.

We can fix this with rule changes:
- Teams only get four set pieces per possession
- If the set pieces are bad, the other team gets the ball
- If they're good, they get four more
- Let's call them "downs"

Happy for Mascherano. Go ask Tata how brutally impossible is that job.

He has been an absolute gentleman every game, always available to talk, always respectful, always honest, always open even for a quick chat or inquiry. You have to love that from a coach.

Also getting better w/ time on the job.

Never forgive Heath for not letting Miguel Ibarra have his last minute for the loons. Like it when there is that gesture to the players and the supporters who want the chance to be there.
Just want to point out that Mascherno played Ryan Sailor (long-time deep reserve; out of contract; almost certainly won't be retained next year) for 10 mins at the end of Miami's final reg season home game last month when he didn't have to. Was just a gesture of humanity/humility.

Incredibly fun team to watch basically all year. Callaghan's done a fantastic job, and wow is this winter about to be very interesting.
Brutal for Nashville that such a great season is ending with such a hollow whimper.

They've been absolutely carved apart here. 13 goals conceded in four games against Miami.

I'm much more of a "team goal" guy than an "individual banger" guy but this shit's stayed with me for 15 years.

Still my favorite thunderbastard in MLS history. Has a level of intentionality to it that few goals have ever matched.

What a player, what a career.

that was easy
If the Sounders get a third this game is over.

If they *don't* get a third, Minnesota is definitely going to equalize and then win in PKs.
