Trying their hardest to avoid getting things done so they can run for re-election on the promise to get things done. How do you even rationalize this? How can you justify selling out your constituents and handing this country to the people who want to destroy it for a fucking CAMPAIGN PROMISE?

I think that this guy is gonna get the ball! #RCTID

I'm going to go out on a limb (brave, I know) and say that this is not the same out-of-possession shape that the Timbers had in Game 2. #RCTID

They've been a counterattacking team for the majority of their successful seasons. That's an identity. But their other identity is the Double Post: pure luck. #RCTID
In all honesty, have the MLS Timbers ever had a clear identity? Ever?

In order to find players for your system, you have to have a defined system in the first place. Game 2 was workable. Should probably be the blueprint for next year. #RCTID
That said, the Timbers genuinely struggle when it comes to signing players who fit what passes for their….system (srsly, can barely type that).

With zero intent of being an asshole, Da Costa stands *WAY* out as a bad signing. He may fit somewhere, but it’s not in the current Timbers’ roster. (4/5)

San Diego, in their first year as a club, instilled a clear identity from top to bottom. The Timbers never found their own identity. Year 50 ends in the same way it began: a brutal beatdown at the hands of a far superior opponent. #RCTID

Some games are over by halftime. Some are over after the first 20 minutes. Portland's must-win elimination playoff game was over from the moment the lineup was released. #RCTID

Gage Guerra finishes this game at right back. #RCTID

But will he be fined for a failure to leave the field in a timely manner? That's the big question. #RCTID
It's hard to find a bigger disasterclass in a high-stakes moment than Mosquera's shift in this game. Responsible for two goals due to a lack of far post defending, and a completely avoidable red card to boot. #RCTID

Dreyer scores the fourth goal for San Diego in the 79th minute. Lozano sneaks by Zuparic (who is occupied by Ingvartsen) and easily finds the Newcomer of the Year at the far post. #RCTID

Gage Guerra gets his chance. He replaces Ayala in the 76th minute. It's Portland's last substitution of the game. #RCTID

Yeah, sure. Rojas can shoot from the center circle. Why not. #RCTID

I think they had that grit and determination in the first half. But the structure was so poor that it made them insanely vulnerable. All energy went out of the game with the 3rd goal. #RCTID
The most disappointing part of this isn’t the loss (I kinda always suspected it) but the way it happened.

Portland hasn’t shown nearly any of that grit and determination they showed last week. Going out meekly and big sad. #RCTID

Scheduled tweet: Timbers still have no idea what to do around the box. Complete lack of off-ball movement. #RCTID

Not a good feeling to already be thinking about the offseason with a half hour left of a playoff game. For the second year in a row too. #RCTID

You'll never guess who was supposed to be at the back post. #RCTID
Dreyer's dummy on Bombino's pass sets up the entire play. Pellegrino is free at the far post to smash home Baird's cross. 3-0 SD, 53rd minute. Game over. #RCTID

Mosquera replaces Fory at halftime. Shape still looks identical. #RCTID

So those second balls? San Diego's been winning all of them. #RCTID
I only have one worry about lining up in a clear back three: less players downfield to win second balls when the Timbers go long. Might be too tempting to play out from the back. We'll see. #RCTID

Halftime thoughts from my couch:

Choosing to press again is the right move. But an aggressive man-to-man press only works if you're matching the shape of the opposition.

Kelsy has received the most service in a game throughout the first half. 4 shots, 1 on target.
