This week Steininger and Yurkevich found this convex polyhedron that you *can't* cut a hole in that's big enough to slide the entire polyhedron through the hole.

They gave it a silly name.

You can cut a hole in a cube that's big enough to slide an identical cube through that hole! Think about that for a minute - it's kind of weird.

Amazingly, every convex polyhedron that people checked had this property!

Until this week.

The mathematician Roland Steinbauer is developing geometric tools that can probe “very badly behaved” space-times where Einstein’s equations break down. He hopes that this math might help provide a foundation for quantum gravity.

The universe is not always smooth. At the centers of black holes, for instance, the math of space-time falls apart. New geometric tools might help reckon with this reality. www.quantamagazine.org/a-new-geomet...

At what point will mathematicians stand up and simply state that hosting ICM in Philly in the midst of these racist travel bans isn't right?
A State Dept. cable says the Trump administration might add up to 36 countries — most in Africa — to a list of 21 countries on which it imposed a full or partial travel ban this month. Citizens can't get visas to the US. Our @nytimes.com story: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/u...
