Friends who use walking pads under your desk: which one do you recommend? I know several of you have mentioned them before.

My wife tried a cheap one and has been really liking using it but it seems to be dying.

I finished writing it all up: Generative AI ∉ (Teaching ∪ Learning). I'm going to keep using this as a reference, incomplete as it is

This is insane. Under absolutely no circumstances should a prof ever discuss the physical appearance of a student in a rec letter! I can’t believe I even have to say that!
Yale prof David Gelernter defends his letter urging Epstein to hire "v small goodlooking blonde" student by saying that he was "keep[ing] the potential boss's habits in mind."

This creep shouldn't be allowed anywhere near students.

What if colleges and universities hired leaders that didnt throw their faculty, staff, and students under the bus and sell out their institutions to the fascist dictator?

What if colleges and universities hired short-term leaders for a year or three to get the really hard stuff done? https://bit.ly/4tlmfm0

On a more positive note, here is an example of the kind of professional math blog post that we need in these times. I wish @joinmaa.bsky.social and @amermathsoc.bsky.social would take note and feature writing like this in their publications.
ICM 2026 out of USA?
There hasn’t felt like a good time for me to post this; I have written and rewritten drafts of this over the course of the last year. But now that several established journalistic outlets hav…

He closes with "I intend to be back next month". Is ICE going to be abolished in the next month? Is the U.S. going to suddenly be a safe place for people not perceived as white, cisgender, able-bodied people?

Certainly not if all we do right now is decide to say nothing.

Devlin says political issues are for MAA leadership. Given their poor track record (e.g. insisting on hosting Mathfest in Florida) on the rare occasion they have said something overtly political, leaving political issues to them is clearly a mistake.
February 3, 2026 at 8:02 PM
Teaching (math) is also inherently political, as universities are under attack and being held ransom (quite literally) by the federal government. Faculty and staff are being targeted and losing their jobs.
February 3, 2026 at 8:02 PM
But also the profession is under attack. Federal funding for mathematics has been decimated, and the largest international mathematics meeting is slated to be held in a place hostile and dangerous for many, many people.
February 3, 2026 at 8:02 PM
Math is political because mathematicians are humans. It's hard to do math if ICE has invaded your community and is abducting or murdering you or your neighbors.
February 3, 2026 at 8:02 PM
"I can't talk about math right now, and I refuse to say anything political, so I am going to talk about not talking" is an incredibly cowardly take in these times.
In a rare pause, Keith Devlin reflects on why he could not write as usual and what this moment means for our shared values as a mathematical community.

Exactly! Once a mere slow drain (on a 30 year old house) led to us finding a termite infestation and doing full remodels of 3 bathrooms 😭

Anyways, wishing you luck in getting this solved with minimal additional fuss (and no additional trips to the hardware store 🤞)

I have a pop up drain that is acting up and I *should*just be able to unscrew it and swap it out for a new one in about 10 minutes, but I am afraid to try because I have had exactly this experience with plumbing projects in the past 😬.

You have my sympathies!
