This is an amazing science story on so many levels. I’m not sure where I net out on Dr. Buck’s approach, but I’d love to have a beer with him.
He made beer that’s also a vaccine. Now controversy is brewing
An NIH scientist’s maverick approach reveals legal, ethical, moral, scientific and social challenges to developing potentially life-saving vaccines.

Here's our reporting on the proposed dismantling of the jewel of US atmospheric science, @ncar-ucar.bsky.social.

The plan is to break NCAR apart and disburse some parts to other locations (like the research aircraft fleet) and eliminate others.

What better way to celebrate #WSW2025 than with the first images from METimage on the newly launched Metop-SGA1 satellite! 🤩

The images capture clouds, storms and Earth’s surface across Europe, North Africa, and beyond in stunning detail.

This animation stitches images from 25–27 Sept 2025. Cont.🧵

New paper led by @masatomofujiwara.bsky.social on the value of high ascent attainment by radiosondes. amt.copernicus.org/articles/18/... Perhaps the easiest perceived 'cost saving' is to reduce the balloon size but that means lower height attainment and diminishes the value considerably.
Justification for high-ascent attainment for balloon radiosonde soundings at GRUAN and other sites
Abstract. We assess and illustrate the benefits of high-altitude attainment of balloon-borne radiosonde soundings, up to and beyond 10 hPa level compared to, for example, 30 hPa, at operational statio...

Imagine if one day the government just decided to make our hurricane forecasting worse under the dubious guise of “security.” Sounds crazy right?
We are losing access to key weather satellite data important for hurricane forecasting. But remember when we said that computer models were less reliant on balloons because they now use satellite data? Well, this is some of that satellite data and we're losing it.

Working with @ricliv.bsky.social, Prof. Hawkins has now updated the stripes to convey an even richer set of data: global average temperatures from the surface up to the troposphere and stratosphere, and also in the ocean from the top 100m down to depths below 1,500m.
