The far right will, of course, treat the Paul Doyle case very differently from one where the accused is darker-skinned or foreign or both. The rest of us must not. That’s kind of the point.

I made a video essay explaining why, in my view, Israel is committing genocide under international law. I hope this helps frame the issue a little bit better and explain why there is a consensus among academics that this is indeed a genocide. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmCl...

When something is a success, people like to associate themselves with it. So it's noticeable how quiet the Brexiters are.

Brexit cheerleaders have gone awfully quiet – so let me remind you what they did to Britain
If we do talk about it, we start to recognise the gulf between their words and reality

I guess Hegseth was sober that day
Hegseth: Typical Trump. All bluster, very low substance… he’s an armchair tough guy. This is a guy who said that John McCain is not a war hero yet he sought his own five military deferments

£715m is far from the total cost of the Rwanda scheme

The way these figures are calculated mean they are mainly "direct" costs and don't take account of other impacts. The Illegal Migration Act was passed to enact the Rwanda scheme and drove spending on asylum up by billions

If there is a vote for bluesky comment of the year, this has my vote.
I don't love it either, but I'm not sure how you tell a man that he should let his only surviving son rot in prison to respect norms, institutions, and the rule of law, when the country you devoted your life to serving just pretty comprehensively voted they don't give a shit about any of that.

I read through Pete Hegseth's books. He:
–Wants a "Long War with Violent Islamism" & bigger Guantanamo
–Fearmongers about Muslims winning elections
–Complains of "legal issues" on torture
–Calls women "distractions"
–Says the US "is the world’s sheriff"

Now sometimes these enquiries can be expedited. Sometimes cases are very straightforward (eg some of the early riot cases where the full offence was captured on video and guilt was immediately admitted).

But the point is that unless you know what the evidence is, it’s hard to make an assessment.

What sort of further evidence? Well the full unedited CCTV for one. Footage from other sources (mobile phone recordings from witnesses, say). Witness statements. Interviews with suspects. Mobile phone reviews to establish fuller context (which can take months).

All off the top of my head.

This means, rather obviously, that the CPS would not (or should not) charge or not charge somebody of a criminal offence based on, say, a selectively edited clip of CCTV.

Other evidential enquiries would need to be undertaken. And if they haven’t been, the CPS will tell the police to do it.

Now. Key to all prosecution decisions is independence.

All decisions are supposed to be based on an independent assessment of *all* of the available evidence. Not only evidence which supports a case against an accused, but the parts which don’t.

If both tests are met, you have a prosecution.

The CPS remain under a continuing duty of review, and must always be applying these tests in light of new information.
