Do you look at this and see at least 10 plant species? Then you are ready for #Plantsgiving 2025!

How many species will be served during your meal??? It ain't a competition, it's just about recognition.

Sometimes, when I'm bored, I check to see if my recent lab-related expenses have shown up in #WorkDay.. and then I reconcile them.

This is 53.

My #plantsgiving totals:
49 species in 25 different families!

So we tallied 41 species across 35 genera for #plantsgiving. Not bad, some of my fellow culinary-inclined relatives couldn't make it 😛
Beyond the traditional faves, a delightful surprise addition to this year's list was hibiscus (part of a lemonade)!

I had my students do #Plantsgiving this year for extra credit. For each of 6 plants they had to find the origin, main regions of production, 2 fun facts, and reflect on their plate (production, biodiversity, etc.). It's been really fun seeing how surprised they are with their results!

It’s almost time!!! #plantsgiving
Tune into the hashtag #Plantsgiving in a few weeks to watch plant biologists geek out about their festive tables. Everyone gets competitive about how much plant diversity we can get into dinner - you really rack up the bonus families with spices 😂

From the same video, a closeup of an ancient leaf gingerly peeled from rock and suspended between acetate sheets. You can see its colors, veins, and even blemishes that might be spots of damage from weather or insects.

A relic from a different Earth, another world, yet instantly familiar.

As a reminder, every calendar we sell allows me to buy more native seeds to distribute for free to Philadelphians this winter and spring, to make it easier for people to support biodiversity in our city!

So get one for a friend, for the office, for the lab, for your cousin, help me help bugs!

First-gen students are 5% more likely to drop out after one bad grade. Why?

Because they don’t always know how to recover—like switching majors or withdrawing. Academic setbacks shouldn’t be the end of the road.

First-Gen Students More Likely to Drop Out Due to Low GPA
A recent study finds students who are the first in their family to attend college are more likely to drop out after receiving a negative grade.

Our new paper in Ecology Letters, led by Jan Divíšek, shows that non-invasive alien plant species that successfully establish within local plant communities tend to resemble the resident native species. In contrast, invasive alien species usually differ from native plants.

Far too many pioneering female scientists have been written out of the history books, including groundbreaking (but complicated) Mary Elizabeth Barber, South Africa’s first female botanist. https://therevelator.org/barber-botanist-feminist/
