This is a slide I use quite a lot when doing POP training for police. Even when an agency or individual wants to follow SARA properly, there are so many institutional pressures on them to skip steps.

A new report from the Swedish police authority is highly critical to its own ability to perform analysis for crime prevention. The police intelligence is not providing analysis for local police to base crime prevention on, nor for assessment of effects.

I haven’t read the full piece, but the argument in the quote seems to be of the form “some good were produced without this” (leaving unsaid “and quite a lot of bad results, too”).
But the argument for pre-registration isn’t that it leads to good results, it’s that it makes results more trustworthy.

Next week I’m running a session for Year 1 students on using AI at uni. What specific points would you make if you were running it?
(For anyone about to reply “I’d tell them not to use AI”, please know I don’t think that’s a useful message for them.)

Very happy that we now start a research education program for police officers in collaboration with the city of Malmö police department. Up to five officers will work 50% as normal, but the other 50% training to become researchers in our PhD program.

Yup, big increase. No idea what's going on because also a smaller increase in knife violent crimes. Hard to tell if they're playing games with categorization or the means of crime have changed.

Now with 7 weeks of data on each side National Guard deployment in DC. Reported violent gun crime in DC is down 44%. Homicides during this period went down 22 to 11.
(Last year during the same two time periods before and after August 11, there were 28 and 24 homicides and many more gun crimes.)

Couple of charts I wanted to share that show the extreme surge in China's trade surplus over Europe this year.
This one shows change for each member state over first 9 months of 2025. Germany way out in front, but Sweden, Hungary, Finland, Bulgaria, France with huge swings...
