I was listening to Joe Hill on the @ukpageone.bsky.social podcast today, and the way he described simply reading as an act of rebellion really struck me. I was thinking how vital it is we fight for our art going forward (creation = rebellion) and that doing something NEW for yourself is the same.
Playing catchup as I thought I had an extra day before my last Japanese lesson of the year, but わたしはまいにちにほんごをはなします。

(I mean that is true, not just what the textbook exercise tells me to write out, but - hot damn is this good for me. Start learn a new language in 2026, your brain will love it!)
I should do my Japanese homework, I say!

One hour later I have done one page and my brain hurts, but goddamit, わたしのともだちはにほんにいきます!

As we mourn Rob Reiner, don’t skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning California’s Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.

Am now fantasizing how to sneak this into the homes of my enemies
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

Here’s a possum that’s been hanging out under my deck at night.
(We found out what the dogs were barking at!)

For your perusal.
I am a big fan.

Even if the mom doesn't have Hep B doesn't mean a newborn won't pick it up somewhere else (a caregiver, a family member, another kid in daycare, via a microscopic scratch) so stop with the "newborns aren't sexually active so why does this matter?"

Facts: The universal hepatitis B birth dose has prevented more than 500,000 childhood infections, reduced infant hepatitis B cases by 95%, and prevented an estimated 90,100 childhood deaths (NFID).

CDC panel makes most sweeping revision to child vaccine schedule under RFK Jr.
The panel voted to eliminate a long-standing recommendation for every newborn to receive a hepatitis B shot, saying it’s unnecessary when the mother tests negative.

Writers (and illustrators!): Take regular breaks away from the keyboard. HERE'S WHY. #WriterSky

I have always been transparent bc aspiring writers need to know.

I never quit my day job as a part-time physician. Spouse works full time.

Writing is gig work. Some years are great. Some years are not. There is a lot of hustle and diversifying to keep all the plates spinning.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

To echo much of what's been said:

Please don't pirate books.

If you can't pay for a book, there is already a solution for you: use a library.

Whatever you think authors, illustrators, and other book career people make, it's less than that. By a lot. Stealing from us isn't heroic, it's crushing.

This is infuriating. We are shepherds for the voiceless, including the pollinators that we need to help grow our own food. (But also--they need to exist for their own sake!) Not to mention PFAS is a very terrible thing in the human food chain.
UGH.

This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

Just finished K-Jane, I loved it.

I laughed, I teared up, I cringed with second hand embarrassment, I heard my inner mom voice say "do your homework".

And now I am hungry for Korean food.

Definitely recommend for the teens in your life!
