It’s an absurdity to think it would protect children to limit their access to science and wonder and learning about our world’s beautiful diversity. We must #endbookbans and support diverse voices in #kidlit.
Republicans: banning children’s books because they feature scandalous, scientifically-accurate information about how many trees are both male *and* female.

In the Belgian city I lived in at the time, people put stuffed toys (mainly teddy bears) in the windows for children to spot on their daily neighbourhood walks. One family made beautiful little scenes with their resident Tigger.

I forgot that social media could be fun. While trying to endure an apocalyptic heatwave while pregnant, I’ve been finding hope on here, reading about Octavia Butler’s beautiful mind (yday was the day of the parable 🤯), and Tolkien’s deep understanding of human nature. #bluesky

Here’s what I tell my student when they express this anxiety:

Write in community along the way and your community will be there to support you further down the path too.

Share your work with friends. Go to readings and cheer on peers and mentors. Activate yourself as a literary citizen.

I immediately added this to my summer reading list. Grown-ups have much to learn from children, and also from children’s books. Writing for and with children has taught me much of what I know about this world ✨
Oh, look! PW wants you to know about BELIEVE IN THE WORLD: WISDOM FOR GROWNUPS FROM CHILDREN’S BOOKS, collected by Amy Gash and me.

Nothing pleases me more than seeing the joy and comfort of Wallace the former stray. I think of him shivering and injured, angry and semi feral, last January… and now he cuddles and plays and just enjoys his life. I basically want this for everyone—May we all be warm and well fed.

EXERCISE! It’s essential, especially for the likes of us who often live/work sedentary lives.
I walk 3-4 miles a day, and not only is it great cardio, but it jazzes my brain so that I have written the majority of my graphic novels on those walks!

Dear Writer,

Remember to find the joy in your story.

Deadlines, word counts, and other expectations (whether they’ve been set by others or ourselves) can get in the way of what made us fall in love with writing in the first place. Don’t let pressure ruin the process for you.

Enjoy your . . .

I wish we could throw away some submission rules. They make the least sense to my neurodivergent mind…
"Each author is different in what they need to succeed. Other than the grammar rules, throw away the writing rules that don't make sense to you. As authors, we all write differently. Don't try and force yourself into any certain type of author-shaped box." - Wrtr #amwriting #author #writing

Books are ad free. AD FREE. This glorious feature is largely undercelebrated imho.

Do any other #kidlit authors have a problem with the phrasing “in the querying trenches”? It makes me think of homesick, cold, hungry teenage boys in mud holes, caught up in tragic, atrocious wars. Querying can be a lonely journey indeed, but is there a more pacifist term to describe the struggle?

Books go bad if you leave them out on the counter unfinished for too long. You could end up with listeria, salmonella, some sort of giant worms on the brain. Better to stay up until 4 am and finish the things, really. You are an adult now, with responsibilities to uphold and an example to set.

💔 The least we can do for these survivors is to promise them that we’ll continue telling their stories. That we won’t forget.
