My hottest writing take is that the oxford/serial comma is not remotely as big a deal as its proponents claim. If it makes a sentence clearer, it's useful. Otherwise, I can take it or leave it. Who cares? It feels like a toy nobody cares about until somebody (allegedly) tries to take it away.

Walked by the kitchen right after my partner connected the potato peeler attachment to its handle and they were brandishing it as if in triumph. I enjoy them a lot.

Earlier this year I read all of the Wheel of Time in 3 months and 1 week.

The show was canceled right around when I finished the books, but I'm watching it now anyway.

One of my greatest worries about climate was “countries will not trust each other enough to do this” but that’s actually become somewhat moot as renewables have become way preferable for many growing countries precisely /because/ they do not trust temperamental petrostates.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I’ve been struggling and I’m glad I’m working to get help. I think a lot of us have built up a tolerance for suffering but what if we don’t have to suffer? What if life doesn’t have to feel like it’s killing us? If you have resources that can help, get help.

related to this a lot of people in the pundit class need to learn how to just be annoyed by someone or something without turning it into What’s Wrong With America
i am fascinated by how nate silver turns everything he doesn’t like into a bespoke ideology. it’s not that he is annoyed by HCR, it is that she is a dreaded “ism” responsible for everything he doesn’t like about the democratic party. same with bluesky.

I hate the online reaction cycle that praises a piece of art a lot and uses it as an example of what’s good about the medium but then the moment it gets awards or enough acclaim or fandom, suddenly we have to talk about how it’s actually not really that good and it’s overrated and always sucked

it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

I don't think rich people are insane, personally. I think that's an insult to mentally ill people, who are generally kept from being wealthy by virtue of their condition, which is not a choice. I think wealth, which is, just makes you evil, bc your attempts to justify it make you a monster

"'They’re spending more money than I would even tax them,' [Mamdani] said in an interview with MSNBC last week."

This is the message. Make it clear that these billionaires aren't just worried about losing money. They're worried about losing the ability to exchange their money for power.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
