"medicinal tinctures" that were just cocaine and alcohol were also super popular. but we still (eventually) made it illegal to sell them as "medicine" bc they were *very* harmful and not actually medically effective. Empirical reality must matter more than popular perception and business interests
Saying that mass adoption of this technology isn't an argument against pointing out basic facts about it, it's just depressing. And more to the point, I think that if there's something regular people can do to mitigate the harm now it's to construct and reinforce a social taboo against this tech.

this is also why targetting porn to "protect children" but claiming children being abused by adults is no big deal. Rape of teenage girls is biblically sanctioned sexual activity, masturbation is a sin. They care about "protecting" kids from hell, but actual childhood trauma is just "god's will"

I dream of a day when corporations have to reapply for every tax break, contract, and grant every six months, with a requirement that it is the CEO who must complete the paperwork, and attest under penalty of law that they personally did so.
