Isn’t it like SUPER bad luck to rename a boat?
The documents...also show other vessels named after prominent leaders are also on the Navy's renaming "recommended list."

Among them are the USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, USNS Harriet Tubman, USNS Dolores Huerta, USNS Lucy Stone, USNS Cesar Chavez and USNS Medgar Evers.
It's not just Harvey Milk.

The Navy is considering renaming ships named after Harriet Tubman, Thurgood Marshall, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, among others.

Open AI’s valuation is at $400 billion. They used about 190,000 books to train their plagiarism bot. Randomly saying 25% of their value comes from that stolen dataset, I think they owe the authors about $526,000 per stolen book.

I'm starting to think that a lot of writers who come into the book world don't know that almost all of the living authors on the shelf at the bookstore have some other source of income.

Expecting to make your living writing books and only writing books is almost certainly going to fail.

I might be rambling, and I might be caught in a doom cycle, but here is the important part: If you're in publishing and you feel like you can't catch up and you don't know how to break out, you are not alone. This game is rigged. All we can do is love the work and try to maintain our sanity. 12/

It's especially difficult to release a book when a dynamo like Silver Elite is dominating the space. An IP book by an anonymous bestseller that got millions in PR budget rules over all while we salivate over the sprayed edges? Oof. I feel like a mule watching a billion dollar horse win the derby. 3/

Christ, here we are
When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles.

Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.

It’s so wacky being a creative who has to balance the interplay of being “here” (online), without succumbing to the false belief that something ALWAYS has be to shared.

Some stuff takes ages to make. Sometimes your process is just for you. I know we all know this, but it’s worth hearing again.

I can’t imagine what this will do. The test-centered culture has already destroyed our students’ ability to deal with any sort of indeterminacy.
