You may laugh, but the Macbeths are a much better role model for a marriage than Romeo and Juliet. They discuss their problems (killing the king of Scotland), share their hobbies (killing the king of Scotland), and resolve their conflicts (by killing the king of Scotland).

hi, welcome to the last 20 years of edtech
A genuinely alarming piece in the NYT about how the developers, scientists and assorted techbros behind "AI companions"/"synthetic care" do not even know or understand the potential harms of the tech they're developing but they're too greedy to stop themselves from developing it.

AI did not arise out of a real human need. It arose out of billionaires’ agenda that this is what the world needs next so they can be even richer. Everything it does, humans do better, it’s better for them to do. What’s left is that it’s causing people mental crisis, polluting, plagiarizing.

I can’t believe we are at this stage of the AI discourse. The argument is basically untalented people deserve artistic success too.

I’m sorry but people talking about talent as an unfair quality that needs to be Harrison Bergeroned away by AI have exactly the same energy as people saying it’s unfair that attractive people have more people attracted to them and the government should legislate their right to a hot wife

The human drive to make art is so innate that if you leave someone alone in a room long enough they'll draw on the walls with their own waste.

And somehow, somehow! AI slop fans managed to kill that drive in themselves

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

This whole thing where billionaires snap up media properties so they can run them into the ground to make it harder for people to call them and their cronies to account is extremely obvious and very tiresome. It also limits our access to largr information about culture and the world, also by design.

Books don't tell readers who they personally are or who they are supposed to be. They do show readers a variety of characters. Implicit in that is this: "Here are some ways of being." Kids books aren't altering your kid to be someone new. They are simply showing them parts of humanity.
