Anybody in Chicago want to start a band?

I'm serious enough about this--I haven't had a ton of luck on Craigslist and Bandmix thinks I'm willing to travel further than I am.

I primarily play sax. And I'm up for almost any style of music (except metal, punk, or country). Or all styles! 1/

Also, a thing that I mention sometimes but is often lost in all that’s going on:

By RNS’ count, at least 55 religious organizations — including the leaders of entire Christian and Jewish denominations — have signed on to lawsuits against the Trump admin this year, mostly related to immigration.

It me! Thanks @billchilds.bsky.social for thinking of me - I love little puzzles!
A thread about Bsky, angelic historians, and black history. Edward T. Rhone faced racial discrimination in 1897 in Duluth. He sued under the MN civil rights act. He was born into slavery in Arkansas. I found Rhones there but I couldn't link him to them. Enter historian @lisachildsar.bsky.social
I had forgotten how history sometimes hits you like a gut punch.

Today, I hit a dead end on finding the origins of a formerly enslaved man born in Phillips County, Arkansas in 1855. The 1860 slave register shows 706 five-year-old boys held in slavery. Seven hundred and six

Reporter's notebook: I actually began working on this story shortly after footage of the incident showed up last month.

But by the time I finally got ahold of folks, the story grew: 2 *other* faith leaders I spoke with *also* reported being shot w/pepper balls while protesting this ICE facility.
Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.

1. As Chris notes, in addition to journalist plaintiffs in here, there's a religious plaintiff: Rev. David Black, a Presbyterian minister who was filmed being shot by federal agents with what appeared to be pepper balls while praying outside the Broadview ICE office.

I just spoke with that pastor…
NEW: I'm listening in on a second new lawsuit out of Illinois today, addressing First Amendment freedoms surrounding protests, including press and religious claims.

Judge Sara Ellis, an Obama appointee, is hearing the TRO motion and has found the plaintiffs, for TRO purposes, have standing.

Great thread. Read to the end.
🧵 Authoritarianism, Democratization, and Coalition Politics.

The consensus around here is, more or less, that the United States is currently a consolidating authoritarian regime controlled by a mix of reactionary populists and fascists.

Hey - there’s our friend Dortha!
Arkansans were out in Springdale today hoping Congressman Steve Womack would spare a few minutes to talk to his constituents. As usual, he had no time for us. Remember this when election time comes around.

An amazing show today! People in northwest Arkansas are ready for our US representative to listen to us and speak out!
Congressman Steve Womack the folks in Northwest Arkansas would like to talk to you. We have many concerns about the way Trump, Elon Musk and the republicans in congress are running our country (into the ground!). Folks are very unhappy…

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

If you have a Republican representing you in the House or Senate, call them to demand they undo Trump's tariffs.

They're already shaken by the 20 point shift in Florida and the Wisconsin loss. You can fuel that feeling.

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.
