🚨 NEW: In #Ohio, oil & gas lobbyists helped draft a #CarbonCapture bill that could let them bury dangerous CO₂ waste & shift liability to the public. Uncovered records show industry wrote talking points, handpicked sponsors & shut out critics. #CCS

In Ohio, oil and gas industry is steering new carbon capture bill
Newly obtained public records show that the industry has worked hard to ensure the legislation prioritizes their interests over climate change concerns.

We are being lied to about the methane emissions produced by US oil and gas. They claim that 20% of US gas production has been certified to have almost no methane emissions.

It isn't believable. It isn't based on science. Unfortunately the media doesn't challenge it.
While the oil industry keeps claiming its methane emissions are much lower than all of the peer-reviewed science, we need to get the science more attention. This came out last year.
Methane leaks in the US are worse than we thought
A new study reveals more leaks from oil and gas operations, but it’ll take satellites, planes, and more to find all the culprits.

@justinmikulka.bsky.social is spot on, as usual. We cannot allow PR dressed up as science to replace actual science. Real science is never proprietary.
One reason they want to attack science in this country is that then they get to just make up things to support their efforts.

Here is "analysis" that claims to debunk peer reviewed science. Is it peer reviewed? No. Will they share the analysis? No.

We need infrastructure to respond to this.

Their "analysis" would not survive any real peer review. As you say, they do not bother to share the details of what they did, but even a quick look shows some severely strange assumptions. It is not science or engineering. It's PR support for their clients in big oil & gas.

This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.
