The first Black female officer in U.S. military history to die in combat.

2LT Emily Perez was killed in Iraq in 2006, for a country that now refuses to claim her.

The Army has erased her story. As if she never existed.

But history isn’t theirs to erase.

We will not let them disappear her.

NEW Analysis of beads from Iron Age Hama, Syria finds they were produced using Baltic amber sourced over 3000km away, highlighting the city’s importance in ancient long-distance exchange networks and indicating a desire for ‘exotic’ goods in Mesopotamia.

The internet had the potential to make humans so much smarter and interconnected. Instead, it's dumbing us down and siloing us off. A real tragedy.

What a joke. Tiktok is state media now. Don't think they won't do whatever Trump says in terms of content moderation and the algorithm.

At this point I think I’m done with all social media (except BlueSky). I’m so annoyed with the way companies and lawmakers have clearly toyed with us and will get away with it. I waste too much time on these apps anyway.. time to restore my attention span. #tiktokban

In 2025, I’d like to invite people to purposefully read more dense and/or complex prose.

There is nothing wrong with
reading slow or reading something multiple times.

There’s no shame in looking up the definition of words or writing out plot events to analyze their importance.

In which @drmjcwarren.bsky.social offers important critiques of Netflix's right-wing "Mary" film, which only consulted one "biblical scholar" who's a MAGA pastor & "digital strategy consultant" who's done no graduate work at all in any relevant field.

Mary: as a Biblical scholar, I can’t recommend this right-wing funded Netflix biopic
My critiques of Mary centre around two themes. One is the way it perpetuates conservative ideals around women and gender. The other is its misrepresentations of Jews and Judaism.

people still get up on “well other countries are worse” no actually they’re not. a country that allows solitary confinement is a grotesque place by any human measure and in the piece you can hear Youngkin’s first thought is “we need to run a tighter ship.” The US is a barbaric place and that’s all

Something lovely for the weekend!

Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age.

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

Exactly. Vaccines are not about "freedom of choice." Vaccines are about public health.
Someone’s reproductive health choices have zero direct impact on me. Someone’s decision to not be vaccinated against transmissible disease could kill me.
I didn’t think this could worse but then Jared Polis compared vaccine choice to reproductive rights.

A repeat thought, Bluesky, & a Librarian told you this so it must be true 🤣

Audiobooks definitely count as reading (as well as listening). If you've played through an audioook, its perfectly fine to describe that as "I have read [x]"

All other forms of assistive software count as reading too 💙📚
