This is a good piece, and speaks to the broader cultural trend of Americans not just missing the point of all sorts of cultural touchstones, but deciding with absolute certainty that the opposite of the point is the point and being furious with anyone who corrects them.

Reading the pardon coverage...I don't think the significance of the Gaetz/Patel/Bondi nominations has sunk in. People still aren't getting what a politicized DOJ and FBI, with the power to arrest/bug/harass anyone for any reason, would be able to do.

low key the most egregious condescension is this idea that conservatives do not have agency and are not making choices but are purely reactive and have no mind of their own
if you live around conservatives, a common bumper sticker reads “liberalism is a mental disorder.” you’ll see effigies of dem politicians, unhinged screeds about satan-worshipping dems written on lawn signs. this stuff gets ignored while any hint of condescension from liberals is treated as endemic

What is the working class? Many invoke it in this election, but no one defines it. How much is it economic, when a plumber can make 10x as much as adjunct professor? How much is it cultural/an identity, or the kind of labor? Why so many 1930s white-guy versions when so many are women and BIPOC?
