Hello, new followers! I'm Lili; I write books, sometimes other people even read them.

This feed holds squirrel stories, the life of a working writer, Morning Walk Reports, random ephemera, and links to articles I find interesting, thought-provoking, or cool.

Nice to have you along.
Today has been so utterly absurd. I'm going to bed.

“I’m like any other actor: don’t mimic me with falseness. I don’t appreciate it and I get paid for doing stuff like that, so if you’re gonna do it without me, you’re robbing me.”

It is a breezy evening, and Boxnoggin wishes to register a complaint about the invisible fingers brushing his tender tuchus during postprandial pee-prowl.

His mother (me) is singularly unmoved, and possibly even amused. Which he feels is an affront to what little dignity he possesses. Poor fellow.

...this makes me bleakly nauseated. We knew our tax dollars would be bled from us to pay the thieving techbros (again); the event is sickening no matter how many times it's repeated.
This week Open AI walked back a call for the govt to backstop financing for its trillion dollar investments in data centers. This was only the tip of the iceberg; a slow bailout for AI firms is already underway. Read more from @ambakak.bsky.social and I in @wsj.com: www.wsj.com/opinion/you-...

Kobo is doing a 30 day free trial promotion for their Kindle Unlimited competitor service Kobo Plus for new subscribers (not sure if this is US only), if you like queer indie books, small press SFF, and backlist SFF from large publishers there's a lot to choose from on this service that's not on KU!

The Global Fraud Economy
Last week, a news story caught my eye, even though it seemed to fly under the radar of general discourse. It was one of those blink and you miss it headlines on the Apple News app, which helpfully refreshes at random intervals and in random ways, giving me headlines I

Look, all I’m gonna say on The Current Topic is that moderation needs to be consistent - if you’re gonna drop the hammer for quoting song lyrics and getting pissed about child rapists, yet you let slide accounts that say trans people shouldn’t exist, then yeah, there’s gonna be some questions.

"It all feels like a massive social experiment nobody asked for, imposed on us by casino speculators taking a few final lever-pulls on the slot machine of capitalism before the whole thing comes tumbling down."
AI Is The Ultimate "Forced Meme"
There are few things in this world more insufferable than a rich person trying to force their shitty ideas on everyone else. And in 2025, there are very few things that feel more forced than “Generative AI.”

Has anyone who has been online for the last 10 years somehow not internalized that when it comes to matters like consent and exploitation, there is no one too beloved to be held accountable? Their fame is not a shield, but a measure of how deep the horror and disappointment will be when they fall.
"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

The annoying thing about the AI author spam is that it could easily just be one person. One Spammer Georg generating this for all of us, repeatedly, because all you have to do is change the name and the emails and then you go do it again to your list.

Speaking of Witches of Eastwick (as we were in the Updike thread), my most crackpot theory is that The Shining ruined Jack Nicholson.

Before The Shining, he was a great actor with a lot of range. After The Shining, he just played guys who leered and shouted "HEEEREE'S JOHNNYYYYY"
