OTD in 1996 Russia signed the Khasavyurt Accords which ended 1st Chechen War. Almost exactly 3 years later we staged false flags to justify tearing the agreement up to start the 2nd Chechen War.

We killed 100s of thousands of civilians. None of this should familiar.

COMMENTARY: All in all, Donald Trump and his motley crew of special envoys, family members and presidential pals seem keener to converge with Russia on broader geopolitical issues than really press Vladimir Putin hard on Ukraine.
Trump fails to get Putin to stop the shooting
Russia insists on terms to end the war that spell the end of democratic Ukraine, and has followed up the Trump call with an assault on Kyiv.

I’ve really had enough of these takes that it’s been unfair that Europe has outsourced its defence to the US.

First of all, the US needed both the bases in Europe and European political and military backing for its global war on terror and the wars in the Middle East. It was never pure charity.

Ukraine was not about to join NATO three years ago -on the contrary, it couldn't.
But they were opening the path to join EU.
That was the existential danger for Putin: a prosperous, democratic country just on his doorstep.
Just like Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
And they know.
"NATO is not the thing that Russia is afraid of. Russia is afraid of democracy expanding to Russia. Why are we in NATO? Its because we are afraid of Russia. And the only thing that really works – the only security guarantee that works – is NATO's umbrella," Kaja Kallas said in an interview with AFP
