Oldies but Goodies - French is Weird 08 - "Junior Edition"
French is Weird - Junior édition (image: Boulet with a moustache and a béret, saying "Ohlàlà") Let's talk about kids. There is a lot to say about playground conversations. (Well, not actual kids, old kids. Like: those are expressions from my childhood, I don't know how kids talk nowadays.) I remember a lot of stupid rhymes like: haut les mains, peau de lapin, la maitresse en maillot de bain. Which could be translated like this: hands up, rabbit skin, the teacher in a swimsuit" (image: a bunny raising its paws, and a teacher in a swimsuit, both very confused) We had another one to tease a friend if he/she was upset (for example: if they just lost a game): "T'as les boules, t'as les glandes, t'as les crottes de nez qui pendent!" (you have the balls, you have the glands, you have boogers hanging from your nose! (well, "nose poops") = Yes, in France we don't have a word for boogers, we call them "nose poops" and I think it's beautiful. "Avoir les boules" in french means "to be upset". Like a lump in your throat. We are talking about THESE balls here (image of glands in the throat) (Image of a group of kids coming back from a soccer game) There was also the classic: "On a gagné, les doigts dans le nez, ils ont perdu, les doigts dans le cul!" (We won, fingers in the nose, they lost, fingers in the butt) Yes in France we don't say "piece of cake" when something is easy, we say "fingers in the nose" I guess the butt part is just for the rhyme. We would also use an old expression "Dans le cul la balayette! Le manche et l'étiquette!" which means "up your ass the brush (small brush, like dustpan & brush) the stick and the tag!" (I guess the second part is just a disambiguation about how and to what depth the brush is to be used) Luckily we had also a lot of clever comebacks, the most popular was "C'est celui qui dit qui l'est!" literally: it's the one who says, who is. Like "I know you are but what am I?" Or if someone insulted you, you could just use "Miroir!" (mirror), and your ennemi would use "contre-miroir!" and you would escalate to "eternal unbreaking mirror!" (Miroir incassable pour l'éternité) Sometimes we would une very elegant expressions from our parents, like: "La Bave du Crapeau n'atteind pas la Blanche Colombe" =(The Toad's drool doesn't reach the White Dove", or this one: "Le Train de ton Ignominie Roule sur les Rails de mon Indifférence jusqu'à la Gare de mon Mépris" (the train of your ignominy rolls on the rails of my indifference towards the station of my despisal) There are a lot of variations of this one. The frenchiest one would be "Ferme ta boîte à Camembert" ("close your camembert box" to say "shut up"). There were also surrealistic insults, like "Tu pues du cul, t'as les roupettes en chocolat" (your ass stinks and your balls are made of chocolate) Some were bad puns, they made very little sense, even in French image: One kid says "arrête!" the other one answers "y'a pas d'arètes dans le biftek!" ("Stop it!" (arrête) - "There are no fishbones (arètes) in the beefsteak") After that, it could escalate to war "you'll see your face at the exit" = "Tu vas voir ta gueule à la sortie!" The fight could include a "shampoo" (noogie)=Le Shampooing or an "indian burn" = when you rub someone's arm on both directions "La brûlure indienne" And we would not "kick someone's ass" but "make them a square head" ("faire la tête au carré") And if the loser was a snitch (un cafteur) he had a little sing-song for him: "rapporteur à quat'moteurs, quand tu pètes tu nos fais peur!" = It means "tattletale with four engines, when you fart you scare us" (again, there were variations like "when you fart you make butter" = quand tu pètes tu fais du beurre) The more I do those comics, the more I realize French makes no sense. (Image of a french guard from "Monty Python's Holy Grail" saying: "your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries".

The image shows oversimplified and idealised wings. Great for some fantasy settings but the bone structure is totally awry. This image focuses on the leading edge of the wing - the propatagium. It's a membrane that fills the gap between the wrist and shoulder, creating a nice aerodynamic shape. Final image shows skeletal schematic of the flying vertebrates forelimb: the bat, the bird, the pterosaur. With a funny comparison to the human hand.

My complaint with AI isn't that I think it'll cause an apocalypse or put everyone out of work. It's that I know what they really want it for, which is to offload responsibility. They want a machine to make the decisions so they, the humans in charge, can't be blamed.
