Helene’s Cat 4 landfall gives the U.S. a record eight Cat 4 or Cat 5 Atlantic hurricane landfalls in the past eight years (2017-2024), seven of them being continental U.S. landfalls. That’s as many Cat 4 and 5 landfalls as occurred in the prior 57 years.

Cops are first responders. There are still people missing. There are people on roofs, desperately trying to contact loved ones, people without their lifesaving meds or power for life saving machines. And their first responders are protecting bread that’s about to go moldy instead of responding.

The language of death and pain and grief and sickness is the language of human existence. You are not doing anyone any favors by striking it from your vocab. It’s a fundamentally childish approach to thinking about life. Just bc some use those words poorly doesn’t mean they should be forbidden.
