This morning, the Bay of Fundy and I greeted eachother with a smile. A partial solar sunrise eclipse painted bold colours across the horizon, decorated with the silhouette of a ring-billed gull flying over head.

Illuminated by the glow of car headlights, this Snowy Owl perched along a rural roadside is a reminder of our shared responsibility for wildlife of the far North. Unfortunately, roads and vehicle collisions remain one of the leading causes of death for these Arctic wanderers.

Hundreds of NOAA employees are being fired by Trump and DOGE.

The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US.

A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans.

Again, this isn't about efficiency.

A beautiful, biodiverse place—perhaps a reminder of what Canadian grasslands once were and could be again.
🦬 Grasslands National Park & Area: One of Canada's largest areas of undisturbed mixed-grass prairie. Home to Canada’s only populations of Black-tailed Prairie Dog, Plains Minnow, 50% of Canada’s Greater Sage-Grouse, & over a third of Canada’s Plains Bison!

“As scientists, we owe it to the world to do a better job communicating the wonders of science, and the incredible discoveries being made by our field, to everyone around us”

As a young(ish) professor, I feel this deeply. What are we doing this for, if we aren’t sharing? 🧪🌎
We need to see science as a social compact where it serves the larger world, not our own interests.

As a first step, scientists must communicate to the larger world much better.

I wrote an essay about this in 2016, which still holds today.

I hope that we can create a society where people are able to spend more time grounded in natural places where they are able to engage with and ponder things like old trees and wild owls.

The common loon - a sentinel of our watersheds.

Sensitive to environmental contamination, their presence on oceans in the winter and on lakes in the summer can be a reflection of healthy ecosystems.
