For the many new folks I'm connecting with on Bluesky, this is the story of the hardest decision I've ever made: leaving baseball.

I was blown away by how much my story resonated with people from so many different industries.

(It's also an inadvertent origin story of my obsession with sandwiches.)

Good morning. I've got a banger new post out today that develops a new method for placing voters on the left-right ideological spectrum, and adds a new, "non-ideological"/affordability axis to usual way we chart & think about US voters (esp swing voters). www.gelliottmorris.com/p/not-just-l...
Not just left vs right: Most voters think about affordability and material wellbeing, not in ideological terms
Most voters want a party that emphasizes cost of living issues and makes the world a better place. Few Americans think in solidly ideologically terms. "Moderates" are mostly non-ideological.

I spent my entire life wishing that first my own family and then my in-laws were a mac-and-cheese-at-Thanksgiving crowd. Finally, last year two separate people brought it. I was in heaven
i would consider macaroni and cheese a "core" thanksgiving side as quintessential to the holiday as green beans or mashed potatoes. some however would disagree *steeples fingers* much to consider

My line with cheaters has long been to place them in the league context: No serious HOF candidate was banned for life for PEDs, and most who (allegedly) juiced were not punished at all. Therefore we should let them in.

By that logic, it's not the HOF voters' place to draw a moral line with Beltrán.
As a player, there’s just absolutely no question. Beltran was a magnificent player with almost no weaknesses *and* he was one of the all-time great postseason performers (give or take a pitch here or there).

I would be able to overlook the Astros stain, understand if others can’t.

If someone I admire is in the Epstein Files then not only will I fully lose respect for them, but I will be ashamed of having admired them in the first place. I don't understand why this is hard for people to grasp
I want to lay down a few markers here for folks as the clock starts ticking down to the release of the Epstein Files.

1) You are going to learn about a lot more disgusting and sickening things people said, joked about and maybe even did. You will likely be disappointed in someone you had admired

Chase Utley played in the perfect era for defensive metrics to adulate him...but too early for awards voters to notice.

Today at The Lewsletter, I probed an alternate timeline where analytics had been part of Gold Glove voting during Utley's prime — and how that would change his Hall of Fame story.

With the possible exception of 2022, you can explain most of the last decade of American elections by assuming that the two things the median swing voter knows about the federal government are "things suck" and "[Obama/Trump/Biden/Trump] is the president"
hahahahahaha ha ha ha. ha. 😬

I wrote about the Hanania situation a couple years ago, and sadly it remains extremely relevant.

It is so telling about people's character when their reflex upon learning they've been consorting with a bigot is excusing their own behavior, not being horrified to learn with whom they have associated

Chase Utley is the all-time UZR leader at 2B, yet never won a Gold Glove. I combed through his career and found seven seasons when — if you applied the player-evaluation methods from just a few years later — he should've been a strong contender.

How retconning awards would change his HOF narrative:

For your consideration, as this year’s Hall of Fame ballot drops: There’s an extremely plausible what-if scenario in which Chase Utley’s résumé features a lot more hardware.

This is a key distinction that I touch on in my analysis. Contemporary defensive metrics probably overrated Utley's range, because the measurements also encompassed his positioning. He wouldn't get such glowing numbers today. But the point is that he did at the time!
