We have unarmed crisis response workers in our town but the thing is if a person has a weapon with them those response workers are gonna call the cops because it's a pretty high ask even for people in the mental health field to respond to a situation where the other person is armed and they are not.
its also,,,, the resources other than police for a suicidal person at risk are ____________

"How does a scam for a can of baby formula work". In several ways. You volunteer to buy it for them but they can't meet you. Could you just Venmo the money? The can they bought at the store was spoiled, they need another can. They still won't go to the pantry or sign up for WIC. The baby is hungry.
I think I've been scammed too many times by people I care about to get mad when churches and other charities use basic tactics to try and filter out scams.

Pete Buttigieg said that as a teenager and young man in the late 90s and early 00s, before gay marriage was legal, before congress overturned DADT, and having grown up Catholic, he struggled with internalized homophobia and wished he was different before coming to accept himself. That's not evil.

I think the reason the "TikTok lady says churches won't help a fictional starving baby when they refer her to a food pantry" discourse pisses me off so bad is that churches are the most reliable and consistent donors to food pantries and homeless services in my area.

This whole discourse is a whole lot of people showing just how gullible they are, and getting mad at people who know how things work for explaining why exactly the tiktoker in question was setting off red flags.
i don’t think the main problem with the american church is “too many of them refuse to be scammed by a lady who is obviously lying.”
There is a lady on TikTok pretending to have a baby that has gone without formula all night — she is calling churches around the country to ask if they can help.
Some of them are really embarrassing themselves. Especially the mega-churches.

My new number one suggestion for parents of kids who are behind in reading or math is to get an IXL subscription and to work on it at home with them.
My kids' school got a subscription last year and we could also access it over the summer. This is his score progression for the calendar year.

I don't even think it's really about SNAP. I think it's that a lot of people they work with on a day to day basis are about to miss their third paycheck in a row, rent is due, and the holidays are coming up.

In the 1940s my grandmother gave birth to a baby who died within two days from hemolytic disease of the newborn. When my twins had the same complication after being born in 2015 the doctors just popped them under some bilirubin lights for 24 hours and then they were fine.
This is especially true for medical care. Virtually any - any - type of cancer was a death sentence. The 5y survival rate for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1960 was roughly 14%. Today it is roughly 95%.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

It's 6pm and it feels like midnight outside.
When that first pitch black by 5 pm weeknight hits after the end of daylight saving time
