What are we DOING here? We're just meant to sit and act like this insane plagiarism and climate threat that requires more money than anything has ever cost is worth it? Are we meant to pretend that ChatGPT is worth this aimless, meaningless destruction of capital and our environment? For what?
Yeah I need way more money than anyone ever got before. I need it because my shit is difficult right now. But it's important in ways even I haven't been able to work out. OpenAI is a serious business. Help me. Please help me please my serious company is so good. Help me

"A request made through ChatGPT, an AI-based virtual assistant, consumes 10 times the electricity of a Google Search"

This isn't a game. This is accelerated destruction via huge usage of power, water, resources etc. Stop using it - especially for messing about!!

AI has an environmental problem. Here’s what the world can do about that.
The sprawling data centres that house AI servers churn out toxic electronic waste and are voracious consumers of electricity, which in most places is still produced from fossil fuels.

If you use AI or allow your students to use it, you’re contributing to the destruction of the planet. Please consider a ban on AI in your classes. Here’s my AI policy if you want a model.

Producing useless bullshit more quickly is not an improvement in educational outcomes. Why would doing things in "a fraction of the time" is usually takes be a good thing? Why do we so disrespect the labor of teaching and learning as to wish it away by outsourcing it to something that cannot think?

What a surprise that UCLA has decided not to “liberate” (in their own words) the poorly paid TAs from grading. Other universities similarly prohibit TAs from using the very AI they’re pushing to grade.

The thing that kills me is you don't need a time machine to understand this. My buddy is in his 80s and grew up on Iowa. He point blank said as a kid sometimes other kids just died. That was his childhood.
I would love to tell you about the times vaccines prevented me from getting sick, but every time it happens, I don’t notice. I just keep feeling well.

Neither do you.

Today I hauled a fridge and freezer worth of food to the trash bin. Our Samsung fridge seems to leak less when it’s at room temperature. Fun times we’re having in midtown.
