Almost two weeks on from publication and I am totally overwhelmed by all the lovely things people are saying about My Grandmother’s Secret. She’s making her way up the charts too.

🧵NOT BY ME, this is a post from someone who wants to remain anonymous but works extensively with trans people pre-transition. They were asked by someone “why do you think that’s so much [coverage of trans people] in the news at the moment?”

This was their response:

Phenomenal women like Betty were the inspiration for a character in one of my books. Anyone who gets the chance should visit Bletchley Park, what was done there was truly mind blowing.

Gritting my teeth and pushing through the pain because I’m going home. How I’m going to manage getting my suitcase up three flights of stairs when I get there is a bridge I’ll cross when I get there.

Cheerio Arosa. Maybe next time will be better. I won’t hold it against you, though. You’re still one of my favourite places to visit.

Splitting the long journey home in two seeing as I can only move at the pace of an asthmatic sloth in this damned ankle.

Just realised that book 3, which is the entire reason I have come to Switzerland in the first place, features a character falling and spraining her ankle. I have been smotted (?) by the writing gods.

It’s all well and good being an independent woman who goes on holiday alone, until you trip down a step and twist your ankle. I am that person who goes to a ski resort and injures themselves without setting foot on a ski slope.

one of the things I do when editing a first draft is jot down the first couple of words of each chapter, to make sure I’m not repeating myself or starting each chapter with a description of the weather. It has given me great pleasure to be reminded that chapter 5 starts with the words David Bowie.

Earlier this week I got very excited about my new kitchen bin, and I’ve just ordered a special battery storage case. I would bemoan the loss of a wild and reckless youth had I ever had such a thing.
