Art Nouveau is when stuff looks like it was made by Elves.

Art Deco is when stuff looks like it was made by Dwarves.

Alright that wraps day 4 and this level. Tomorrow is a new blockout for #Blocktober #gamedev

Breakdown
I love transitions and dynamics. It's in all the work I do. Setting the player properly in a subway and unveiling the city is a simple and effective trick. Cyberpunk did it why not I

Swapped over to night lighting. Def need some work here but will have to make some slight adjustments before moving on. Tomorrow is all on blocking out the middle spaces and giving it some character/interaction. We have a lot of the building blocks. Need to tape it all together

First #blocktober for me over on Blue Sky. Hopefully this sticks because the other websites is shit.

Started this over the weekend, only going to spend a couple days on it. Focusing in on fundamentals. Getting my framing, references, and POIs together. Might squeeze in some gameplay.

Influential enough to merit your own press release and immediately follow it up with a picture of your extremely old ripped boxers.

The game dev dream, I aspire every day to reach this level

Gave the new team a whole lot of criticism (it was asked for) and it was handled very well.

Very much liking how this shaping up. I'm sure some of my criticisms were ridiculous as I'm still getting acquainted with the new workflows but the fact the team handled them with grace is such a good sign.

One constant in game dev is me being jealous of artists. Being able to convey what's in your head on paper/screen is such a valuable skill and never fails to impress me. It's the closest thing to magic and something I always struggle with.

Need to find some drawing tutorials and stick with them.

Hell yes it's that time of year again
Hello BlueSky.

This account is run by the same person running BlocktoberLD over on Twitter. Next month is when Blocktober kicks off, which is a month long event celebrating the work of level designers in video games!

Looking forward to celebrating with you all!

Is the gamedev crowd here big enough that it's worth posting my videos on here yet? Just released a new one on how to start making (OG) Doom levels in less than 5 minutes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTIc...

Even after digesting the unity news for hours I'm still getting basic details messed up.

Higher fees for smaller audiences
Fees start AFTER the threshold is hit

It's like they have a treasure map but they flipped it upside down before reading it out loud what are they on.

Also new game dev update just joined Electronic Arts as a Game Designer.

Not ditching my Level Designer roots, but the opportunity here is very exciting especially with the job market being the way it is.

Some very cool things coming down the pipe.

The physics handling in Starfield is pretty nuts. I get the complaints on the Creation Engine but man are they continuing to push the limits, very cool to see.

As someone who has played heavily with physics and zero-G in unreal, this stuff is not simple.

Hearing old game dev stories about breaking into the industry is as fascinating as it can be infuriating.

Me: How'd you get in?

Vet: Met so and so at a mixer and they said "you have moxie kid!" and hired me on the spot. How about you?

Me: I've led/built many projects and applied to 100s of jobs

Don't have much new to show game dev wise this Saturday (prepping for some interviews next week).

So just going to say pay QA a living wage. Peeps don't get near enough credit.

Without them I'd be flying blind in design, all the respect to them and what they do for the game.

When it comes to game dev and personal side projects I'm starting to lean more and more into scope out of reach. Not enough so your project is a dumpster fire but I really hate seeing portfolios these days and they are almost identical to everyone else's.

I get scoping down so you can get...

So far my takeaway from this site is it has a very "forum feel" and I don't mean sites like Reddit.

I'm regularly stumbling across people I don't know multiple times, reading their posts, and getting a sense of who they are.

Very fucking cool

Hope that scales, especially for game dev, very comfy

#GameDev

Hey all!

My name is Kyle and I'm a Design Lead on a game called Heart and Core (steam page coming soon). When I'm not leading I'm generally prototyping new mechanics, designing levels, and making very dumb but fun experiences.

Here's my last published demo reel, just wanted to say hi

That’s level design. It also includes making the level functional with scripting and other tools, as well as building/iterating on encounters, puzzles, etc.

Environment art is the side that makes the set dressing, though they might work closely with LDs as part of the process.
