Yes, people dislike wearing face masks but reality is that with all the viruses circulating (COVID, bird flu, regular flu, RSV) you can choose to be a little uncomfortable wearing a mask in public -or- you can choose to be sick constantly. That's what our options are really coming down to.

also, because some people are already misinterpreting this: there are no reports of any human contracting H5N1 from the food supply and enough contamination already that we'd have PROBABLY seen it if it were likely to be a thing, but we're not going to have a functional monitoring program anymore
I successfully nerd-sniped @niq.aeli.net into researching the cooking times to inactivate H5N1 (tl;dr: cooking to 160 F kills it immediately, for lower temps like sous vide the FDA standard 6-log reduction temperature/duration tables are going to be fine)
if anyone is attempting to figure out what to do with cooking beef to avoid H5N1, I dug up the actual study that ARS did on inoculated ground beef cooked over a standard grill (summary: www.ars.usda.gov/research/pub..., full study: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...).

By the way, I have eight years of experience teaching gender and sexuality classes in a deeply weird freedom of speech context, that was also in an extremely queerphobic bit of the former Soviet Union, if anyone wants my professional advice on how to keep working on this stuff in a hostile climate.
Trying to do what I’ve always been doing: teaching and sharing my experiences. Except now it’s blog posts, but the two blog posts I wrote between the election and now have probably seen more traffic than any of my academic work.
