Tumblr user mollyjames: If you've ever thought to yourself "I basically know who this person is" about a stranger from reading their posts or watching their youtube videos, I guarantee you're wrong. Yes, even if you've been following them for a long time. Knock it off. Tumblr user ajaxgb: It's possible to know a fictional character purely from the little vignettes in a story because the author has intentionally structured those moments to show every relevant facet of the character. If you finish a story, and there were two scenes where the character was nice and one where they liked rollercoasters, then that's the character! They are nice and they like rollercoasters. REAL PEOPLE DO NOT WORK LIKE THIS. Real people posting on social media may appear somewhat similar to a fictional character being revealed scene by scene. DO NOT FALL FOR IT. You are not being shown a curated collection of carefully authored scenes that intentionally build up to a full character! You are seeing a random assortment of moments when the person felt like posting on social media, filtered through imprecise wording, missing context, whether the person slept well the night before, and who knows how many other factors. Real people are orders of magnitude more complicated than fictional characters because they are not designed to be easily understood by an audience! If you try to interpret social media posts as a found-footage story it will lead only to ruin!

This is the end of the premium edition of wheresyoured.at - my piece on GPT-5, but I wanted to make sure the conclusion was outside the paywall.
Yet what I’m left with in writing this is how wasteful all of this is. OpenAI, a company that has already incinerated upwards of $15 billion in the last two years, has chosen to create a less-efficient way of doing business as a means of eking out a modest-at-best improvement. In our own lives we’re continually pushed and pressured and punished if we get into debt, judged by our peers and our parents if we spend our money recklessly, and if we’re too reckless, we find ourselves less likely to receive anything from credit to housing. Companies like OpenAI live by a different set of standards. Sam Altman intends to lose more than $44 billion by the end of 2028, and graciously told CNBC he was “willing to run at a loss” for a long time, where he was treated like this was a smart, reasonable decision, rather than to rein in his spending habits and be more mindful. The ultra-rich are rewarded more for their errant spending habits than we are for any thriftiness or austerity measures we make, and none of us are afforded the level of grace that Sam Altman has been. “Has been” feels appropriate. ChatGPT-5 is an engineering nightmare, a phenomenally silly and desperate attempt to juice what remains of the dying innovation and excitement within the walls of OpenAI. It’s not November 2022 anymore, and, let’s be honest, there really hasn’t been anything exciting or interesting since GPT-4. There is nothing exciting happening at this company. As many as 700 million people a week allegedly use ChatGPT, but nobody can really say why, and OpenAI, despite their massive popularity, cannot seem to stop losing billions of dollars, and they cannot seem to explain why that’s necessary other than “this shit is really expensive, dude.” Can anyone articulate a reason why we need to burn billions of dollars to do this? What are we even doing? Why are we doing it? Has everybody just agreed to do this until it becomes completely untenable? Gee fucking whiz Sam Altman, sounds dandy, and how much better is this you say? Oh you can’t really say? Fucking brilliant! Hey, does it do anything new? No? Oh what’s that, it’s actually our job to work that out for ourselves? Thanks man! Anyway, none of this will end well. Not even the boosters seem to be having fun anymore. Everybody’s just flailing about waiting for the end. Even Sam Altman seems tired of it all. I know I bloody well am.

Kurt Vonnegut’s definition of what makes something “art” is one of my favorites I’ve seen - from a letter to his brother in 1995.
People capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the art-ist. Again, the situation is social rather than scientific. Any work of art is one halt of a conversation between two human beings, and it helps a lot to know who is talking at you. Does he or she have a reputation for seriousness, for sincerity? There are virtually no beloved or respected paintings made by persons of whom we know nothing. We can even surmise a lot about the lives of whoever did the paintings in the caves underneath Lascaux, France. So I dare to suggest that no picture can attract serious attention without a human being attached to it in the viewer's mind. If you are unwilling to attach your name to your pictures, and to say why you hope others might find them rewarding to look at, there goes the ballgame right there. Pictures are famous for their human-ness and not their picture-ness. There is also the matter of craftsmanship. Real picture lovers like to "play along," so to speak, to look closely at the surface to see how the illusion was created by nothing but an unusual human being, with hands and eyes. If you are unwilling to say how you made your pictures, there goes the ballgame a second time. Good luck, and love as always K
