Morning rush-hour near London's Oval station. Trains pass underground every few minutes and there's a continuous flood of bicycles, but still there's one lane of gridlocked traffic. Your city will always have exactly as much gridlock as it makes room for.

"I cycled to school when I was a kid, and we didn't need fancy cycle lanes."

Yeah, but there's three times more traffic than there was in 1973..

Twice as many cars as there was in 1982..

..36% more traffic on urban minor roads than there was in 1994..

..and cars were *way* smaller, and lighter.

Best, strongest statement by sr official of where we stand and what is needed now.

Civil duty to see it.

People still are tragically underestimating what this is doing to our societies.
The rich got richer and richer, super rich, mega rich. They are dictating policies.
So it gets worse — and they get richer. It tears our societies apart.

An infrastructure project can be a "planning disaster" and still be foundational to shaping its region. That, after all, is the political magic of infrastructure: once it's built, it no longer matters whether it was a good idea.

Interesting thoughts. I can't help think about is the projects that start that way but then changed.

For instance in 1977 even the great Peter Hall could consider BART a "great planning disaster," whereas today you couldn't imagine the Bay without it.

Time heals wounds, but the wounds are real.

But Lee Waters MS does in this refreshingly honest speech. Almost every word of it applies to England as much as Wales.

There are households round here who have a massive SUV each, a car for each kid, a sporty car for fun and a £60k campervan for occasional weekends away. They don't need reduced fuel duty to make ends meet, and it's the wrong tool to help those who ARE struggling financially. Just raise their incomes
How about providing transport alternatives rather than subsidising fuel costs for people who can pay £800 a month to rent their Land Rovers?

Design is fundamentally a process of carefully balancing contrasting needs within limited resources (space, money, time).

Abstract rigid standards make it much more difficult for designers to find that balance, so it comes at the expense of more weakly regulated design elements or with higher costs
