The guy behind the guy behind the times
My radio's broken, and can't be arsed with the pub as I'm trying to write for a deadline tomorrow. I had a ticket offer to the match too and had to turn that down. So resorting to this app and some annoying lad on youtube hosting a watchalong. 165 of 1000 words drafted so far 🥴 #nffc

400 jobs at risk. A campus set to close.

This film explains what’s happening at the University of Essex and why staff, students and the local community are organising to stop it.

Hands up if someone, or several someones, immediately sprung to mind...
One stark lesson from Epstein. People who are accustomed to have others defer, even grovel, to them, can get a false impression of their capabilities and the capabilities of their chums who are in a similar position.

A vast array of data suggests that school, not social media, is the biggest modern threat to the mental health of children. If you were recently a child, that won’t be a surprise. If not: enjoy the post :)

It intrigues me that “philistine,” (n. uncouth or uncultured), means this in virtue of the ancient association between the Palestinian people and indigeneity. The term was first used by the Israelites to refer to the non-semitic locals (Philistina).

So difficult to talk about immigration on this app. Far too many folks can't be positive about immigrants without describing how immigrants serve them with their labour, e.g. in healthcare and so on. People shouldn't be valued by how they serve them ⚰️

Indian state commits violence through its nationalism and resulting immigration policies (e.g. against Bangladeshis, which is in the news a lot if they read it) that the u.s. could only dream of. But of course India isn't the u.s. is it, which is the only thing they care about

People are asking a lot “how is this happening?” It’s happening the way abolitionists have warned you for decades it’s happening — you can’t dehumanize whole groups of people, pay for their brutalization & not expect for more bounty hunters to come.

The Home Office Minister says he wants to embed cultural change within his department. You can't change the indelibly eugenicist nature of border control. It'll always lead to scandals like this. So much so that 'business as usual'is far more honest a term to use than 'scandal'.

It somehow is always the widening participation programmes that are the ones that get cut first, that get deemed dispensable.

Shame on @universityofessex.bsky.social. Transforming society for the better is #UKHE 's role, Essex's in particular. Have you forgotten what you were established for?
In yet more devastating news, the VC has confirmed her plans to cut 80% of academic staff from Essex Pathways, our foundation year department. This would effectively close down all our existing foundation year programmes through the back door.

But it's not a done deal yet. Please share urgently.

What's most chilling about this is that in both domestic and Strasbourg jurisprudence, the atrocities of the 2nd WW have been weaponised to specifically disentitle people of colour to Art3's protections. This approach is historically illiterate, as it sees those atrocities as an aberration only.

So few parents follow through on their moral convictions. The sense of fairness many of them performatively encourage in their children, are contradicted by what arseholes those parents are to those around them.

Part of me would rather go back to the non-stop pressure of being a legal aid lawyer, than have to spend another day among talentless masters of managerialism in academia. You get to a stage where you wish you'd learned a trade back when you had the chance...

Every film I see is copaganda. Every time I slump into the sofa to watch telly, there's some game show on where celebrities gamble with money for charities that they could easily donate themselves to the cancer patients, disabled or (in this country especially) sick pets they feign concern for.

Utterly devastating. Sending solidarity to @ucuessex.bsky.social. Managers keep flouting all the legislation about consulting staff and trade unions and keep getting away with it. It's mindnumbing but shouldn't stop us from standing up for staff and students and for what we know university to be
It's official: 400 redundancies and a campus closure. At-risk staff will get a letter next week. Absolutely no serious consideration of any of the union's counterproposals.
