The best way journalists can support indie games is to cover more than whatever the current indie hits/darlings of the moment are. Games like Hades, Blue Prince, and Silksong do not need help with visibility, but discoverability is the biggest challenge facing many indie devs today.

I wrote more words about how it feels to be a translator watching the games press report on AI and labor, coming from a field that's fought these battles for decades. It may look like I'm beating up on one outlet, but it's not about them; I've been trying to write this for me and my peers all year.
You Can't Report on Hunger While Taking Bread Off the Table
On the proliferation of machine translation in video game outlets covering the effects of AI on labor.

if you are actually concerned with devs getting paid what they're worth you could probably say more useful things than "games should be $100". you could condemn excessive exec pay. you could fight for unionization and better labor protections. you could display, like, any interest in ending poverty

'AAA games should cost $100' I think most AAA games are already marketed at the $120+-ish price bracket, it's just that you can get them with the poor-person discount for the 'low' price of $70 if you don't care about launch DLC, etc

I’ve been working for 15 years as an animator and I can tell you without a doubt, the best fix I ever found for imposter syndrome is living a full life where your days and worth don’t hinge on whether or not you were a good animator today.

been having the music/games 'industry' parallel on the mind all the way through games week, and that always leads back to me thinking about steve albini being essentially my standard for the kind of person i want to be in a scene/community. heres a little something from a reddit ama he did ages ago

as an update to this: I had to send a single joycon over to kyoto, wrapped in bubble wrap and put into a box. repair costs were 2,000 yen total, AND we had to pay the shipping fee (again) for nintendo to send it back.

Cheaper than buying a pair of brand new joycons for 8000 yen, but still...
so uhhh are switch controllers supposed to look like this? im like 90% sure the battery is swollen on the pink joycon…

not sure what to do here. do I send it back to nintendo? official website says I need to pay for battery replacement

Folks who create videos about games on the internet: I have questions for you if you'd be so kind. I'm trying to determine the relationship between traditional media and those who create videos about games and have never worked for the games press. Sharing is appreciated!

and that’s a wrap on TGS2025 for me!

out of the previous four I’ve been to, the event itself was pretty mid. the main draw of TGS, the big company booths, were weirdly… plain? empty?

glad I could meet some old friends, but yeah. kinda disappointed.

It's legit my opinion that people with loc backgrounds should be hired to do original games writing way more often than we are. Part of the job is often punching up stale material. Barks especially, we handle so many, a lot of us have likely written more in our careers than the original writers.

A fellow hole-enjoyer! I myself saw the Ryugado Cave in Kochi last week, where there was a 2000-year old vase that some guy forgot (idiot) and is now covered in limestone deposits. They call it “God’s Vase” (神の壺)

Also spotted: bats (inside) and crabs (outside).
