It's also fair for folks to not want google to take their data for *any* products, and it's still fair to be at the very least suspicious about *what* products google is using data for.

There's also no need for the categories to have been part of whatever "smart features" are

Soooo...Many of us weren't basing our jump to turn things off of any social media posts, but rather what google was telling us. That they were integrating Gemini more into "workspaces", and that smart feature data was going to be used for products.

If the two things aren't connected, fair. But...

Here's how to turn off "smart features" in Gmail. As of this week, it is on by default and explicitly allows Google to use your emails to feed its AI. bsky.app/profile/them...
you do have to do it in a couple of places but this tutorial makes it easy to go uncheck the boxes that otherwise lets Google's AI read all your shit. or move everything over to protonmail but moving everything over is a giant thing I know.
Google has started automatically opting you in to let it read your stuff to train AI. You need to turn this off in SEVERAL places in your settings (not just for Gmail), if you want to maintain privacy and confidentiality.

Spent some time doing this yesterday. If you don't want your emails used to teach Google's AI, I suggest turning off "smart features" and then trying this.
Okay, so you're in your gmail, and you have a bazillion emails in your main inbox due to turning off smart features. What's the easiest way to go through them? Well you could go page by page.

Or...If you know specific companies send a lot of emails, there's a quick trick.
For my laptop, while I do have a good amount of free space to partition/separate to try out Linux, I should also make sure I don't have unnecessary files and games taking up space.

And for email. (stares at tab showing the number 58,287) I uh. Don't think I need to import EVERYTHING.

Really excellent tips in this thread, I've been auto filtering my emails like this well before Google insisted on doing it for us poorly

this.

also, if you care about disability justice, hope you’re also pro-fat liberation.

do you know how many people have gone to the doctor for troubling symptoms, been automatically dismissed and told to lose weight, and then developed late-stage/severe chronic and acute illnesses?
It also fucking sucks that so many people on the Left(s) refuse to understand anti-fatness as a system of oppression, and fat liberation as a legitimate anti-oppression movement.

It sucks, because it's all connected, and if you don't see this part, you don't have a clear understanding of the whole.

everyone's talking about how bright and charming zohran must be, which is true, but then you remember the spider-brained cryptkeepers trump's surrounded himself with since '15 and realize a single smile from mamdani must have hit like barbecue spare ribs down the gullet of a 12th century peasant.

man, this is such a good point -- Mamdani might be the first happy, well-adjusted person Trump has seen in weeks

I've told this story before, but I'm going to tell it again, because I think it's important with all the copaganda floating around On Here.

Last year I was representing a marginalized client charged with a crime in a rural client who had been denied the public defender.

It stops sorting your inbox into folders, btw, when you turn this off. As the inbox folders predate Gemini, this is a passive-aggressive attempt to make gmail a miserable experience unless you turn AI on, not a necessity.

Really, *really* inconvenient but makes me more determined to keep it off.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

People with #MECFS, and many with #LongCOVID experience post-exertional malaise: a flare of symptoms after activity. The response is disproportionate to the activity and can lead to permanent drops in functional capacity.

This is not specific PT/OT, it's telling the person to walk more steps tomorrow than today, as if it's something that would not have occurred to the patient without help.

It's astonishing hubris.

And it is harmful, especially when it comes with the adjuration to ignore resultant symptoms.

...of the presumption that gradually increasing exercise is a rehabilitative for people with infection-associated chronic conditions like #MECFS and #LongCOVID.

The idea of graded exercise as a special therapy your doctor has to help you carry out is absurd.

The rationale behind these studies, Seltzer contests, is [that] “it presumes that the patient had never heard of exercise until a doctor told them [it] exists.”

Thanks to Simon Spichak for putting this idea into print. I've said multiple times in interviews that it's the strangest part... 🧵

Look, full offense, but claiming that you can't find a disabled adult character sexually attractive *solely* because you view them as a child, that is ableism.

You can be attracted or unattracted to whoever you want, but viewing disabled adults as children when we're not? Is ableist.

Okay, I may or may not have a whole semi off topic ramble about some of the skills Mamdani is likely using, but overall?

I'm not surprised, and daaaamn Mamdani. Give me pointers on how to improve these sorts of charismatic skills.
Trump has said a number of times that you'd be surprised how much he and Mamdani agree on. (Talks again about building housing, lowering rents.)

Trump: "I expect to be helping him, not hurting him."
