American Science & Surplus’ Milwaukee retail location is still open (yay!), but like many smaller businesses they need people to shop the store during this holiday season.
I chatted with the new owner of American Science & Surplus about A. the store still being open, B. things the store would like to bring back in 2026, and C. the need for folks to shop at the store.

6 more days to apply for an Otherwise Fellowship!

Past fellows were glad it "gave me motivation to keep trying again and again" and "provided a validation both for my own work, and also for the idea that this type of writing is both valued and needed".

Given how mega-companies operate today, perhaps this entire acquisition will turn out to be the result of a Netflix exec’s irrational obsession with regaining control of Friends streaming rights.

So the government is joining The War on Cars by making them more expensive to operate? LOL!
My neighbors are just dreaming of being able to drive wood-paneled station wagons, or Gremlins, or Pintos again.
Sean Duffy on slashing fuel economy standards: "This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s station wagon. Maybe a little wood paneling on the side. We can bring back choice to consumers."

People love to tell disabled folks to “take responsibility”.

Take responsibility for what exactly?

For being sick?

For not getting better?

For needing social supports?

What they really mean is “we don’t want OUR taxes helping YOU survive”

Although not thought of primarily as a children's author, Ursula K. Le Guin helped spark my love of reading. I was captivated by Ged's journey as a young adult in "A Wizard of Earthsea" and how he learned the rules of both magic and the larger world.

Le Guin's worldbuilding remains among the best!

Like several other #Bookvember participants, "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle was the children's book that first captured my imagination, then impacted me as both a reader and a writer. L'Engle demonstrated there was so much more to telling a great story than simply walking through the plot.

Hello, #Bookvember!
I'm a reader and writer who can't imagine life without books. We had a grade school teacher who read to us at the end of each day, which led me (almost immediately) to the library to find other books I could read. Writing followed when I realized I could share my own stories.
