No, no. Just the lead *poisoning*
The thing that was making America great was apparently lead.
Today EPA chief Lee Zeldin announced that the agency is rolling back 31 regulations.

He's taking aim at mercury, soot, and toxic pollution restrictions, and federal protection of wetlands.

The EPA will also rewrite rules limiting pollution from fossil-fuel plants and cars, and more.

One of these days someone should come up with a term about how using legal threats to shut down speech leads to more people being interested in that speech. Would be handy if someone at Meta had learned about that at some point.

Oh well. Too late now, I guess.
Meta does NOT like a new book by a former senior public policy staffer & got an emergency injunction to stop publication, distribution, & promotion of the work about.fb.com/wp-content/u... I’m curious to see what @mmasnick.bsky.social & Bluesky’s *robust* community of lawyers & scholars say about it

True story: When I got back on land from the JoCo Cruise and all the world was shutting down and I was in the airport trying to get back home, I got a text from my local bookseller which read: "We know you were away, so we saved you a package of toilet paper, come to the store to get it." And I did.

Crazy thing is in mid-February 2020 when we heard this new virus was going around, I said to my spouse, "I have a bad feeling about this one. We should stock up."

And we did.

It turned out to have been a Very Good Thing because we had plenty of TP and other stuff after the store shelves emptied.
For me it was March 11, 2020: I was on the JoCo Cruise and people were telling me that Tom Hanks caught COVID, which was not great because I had lunch with him not long before. Then my editor emailed that my book tour was cancelled, along with everyone else's, and also, the NBA season. Wild times.

Covid.. Had people sitting on youtube all day listening to these dumb ass pods and believing they were smarter than Dr. Fauci... ignorance became celebrated.
What do yall think was the nexus event that created this branch in the timeline?
I’m torn between the Cats movie and when people were licking gallons of ice cream in the grocery store and putting it back.

👇🎯 For years now, there has been an entire class of Pundits whose stock in trade has been contrarian “folks are hysterical & deranged to worry about authoritarianism” takes. Everyone’s wrong a lot of the time. But the sneering condescension & near-total lack of reflection is the tell.

Question for those advocating that colleges be “neutral” on political topics:

Do you believe Columbia University should not take a stance on whether the United States should revoke its students visas or green cards based on the administration’s hostility towards their speech?

If you use python, but you don't use uv yet: why?

The first time folks use the re module in #Python, they often reach for re.match().

I usually recommend against using re.match().

Why?

Because re.match() matches from the beginning of the string, but does not match until the end of the string. Many folks find this behavior unexpected.

as predictable as clockwork: chasing Wall Street's need for improved quarterly returns at ANY cost, streaming companies are going to steadily make their services shittier and more expensive

then when users inevitably migrate back to piracy they're going to blame absolutely everything but themselves
