There are lines from some songs that stick with you and pop into your head repeatedly over the years. From this song for me it's:
"I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue".

Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie

Do you remember a guy that's been in such an early song?
I've heard a rumour from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junky

My mama said to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

"If that Adams quote is ringing any bells, that’s probably because it’s been widely reproduced all over the internet – though often, strangely, with slightly different wording which pushes the cut off to 35, in a manner that makes it look hilariously like some tech-savvy 33 year felt miffed."

It is significant that Martin Lewis (and not, say, Richard Tice) is blaming government 'policy costs' for energy price rises.

"We grant people different rights based on their genetic heritage and on which scrap of land they happened to be born on. That’s mad, isn’t it?"

I just think, when debating immigration and so on, that we should try not to lose sight of the fact that "nationality" is a made up thing.
Why does nationality matter, anyway?
Deciding someone's legal rights based on a nebulous combination of birthplace and parentage is a bit weird

Software utilities, I think, must be treated the same way: regulated (including price) and operated under oversight. Otherwise, they're just a robber-baron monopoly with a stranglehold on the economy.

Really good, fairminded and I think right on the question of why both Sunak and Starmer became unpopular so quickly and what the policy lessons from that are:
Reeves should risk it all on one last roll of the dice.

Raise income tax, break the triple lock, slay the deficit, spend the money on the things she believes in.

It may not work - but better than waiting for doom to overtake her.

Yeah, as someone who’s been on the “just get rid of him” train for a while… the only time I don’t want to see him go is in the wake of this budget
As soon as leadership talk seriously arose, Starmer's chances of staying in post until the next election became almost impossible.

However, a move against him in the wake of what is a hugely consequential budget, which will rightly break election pledges on the taxes, seems incredibly problematic.
Exc - Downing Street has launched an extraordinary operation to protect Keir Starmer amid fears among the prime minister’s closest allies that he is vulnerable to a leadership challenge in the wake of the budget.

The BBC is apologising for its Panorama edit. It shouldn’t. First, the narrative is true: Donald Trump *did* incite the Capitol riot. Second, the apology won’t appease those attacking it. So why not at least stand for something?

Wrote this on it earlier this week:
inews.co.uk/news/world/b...
The BBC was right about the Capitol riots. In a sane world, Trump would be in jail
The US President faced impeachment over the violence, and in a world where Republicans had more courage, he would have been found guilty

The full transcript of Zohran Mamdani's acceptance speech is very much worth reading in full. Even if you don't agree with your politics, it's very beautifully put together.
